Date syrup is a thick, caramel-coloured sweetener made from dates. You may have seen it on the shelves in your local health food store, as many cooks embrace it as an alternative sweetener. Date syrup is straightforward to make at home, can be more affordable than store-bought, and has the lush caramel hue and heady date flavour of its namesake fruit. You can make it by boiling chopped dates, puréeing the cooked ones, and squeezing out their liquid, leaving a thick paste you can save for other uses. The liquified date after straining is relatively thin but quite flavourful, forming a syrup. Consuming such has its perks, which are outlined in the following sections.

Has antioxidants

Studies indicate that dates are high in antioxidants, which makes any related products healthy for the immune system. Ageing or poor immunity damages your cells, and consuming date syrup because of the antioxidants it contains can prevent such issues caused by these. Therefore, eating foods rich in antioxidants can help our body be safe against various diseases, such as breathing problems, heart disease or brain damage caused by ageing, such as Alzheimer's.

Has antibacterial properties

New evidence shows that date syrup might have antibacterial effects. However, experts need to conduct more studies to back such claims, but date syrup can minimise numerous bacteria growths because it has phenolic compounds. People consume date syrup because of its distinctive taste and health benefits and use it to cure wounds, which can support the effectiveness of this syrup as an antibacterial product.

Rich in minerals and vitamins

Our body needs several minerals and vitamins during the day to stay healthy and strong. That's why it would be best to consume date syrup as it has the required nutrients of the human body. It also contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin A, which are beneficial to the body.

Natural sweetener

Sugar is far more superior to a natural sweetener. Fortunately, date syrup is delicious. This thick, dark syrup has a complex flavour and natural sweetness that's less sugary than honey, agave nectar, or maple syrup. The molasses-like taste of date syrup does more than sweeten baked goods and sauces. It enhances them.

Complex flavour

Date syrup solely came from dates, meaning it contains no other ingredients. There are no additives. It's just one healthy ingredient that delivers a nuanced and unforgettable flavour. With hints of caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla, date syrup turns every smoothie, dressing, and cookie into something truly unique.

Aids digestion

From relieving constipation to plugging up a leaky bum, dates and other related products like date syrup boast several digestive benefits because of the high fibre content. You need to consume foods with high fibre content to get things moving through your digestive system and drawing water into the digestive tract, causing you to have healthy colon and bowel movements. By helping cleanse the gastrointestinal system, dates can also reduce the risk of related diseases, such as colon cancer or haemorrhoids. Dates are also one of those foods that promote good bacteria in the stomach, optimal for gut health.

Make bones stronger

Dates are an excellent source of calcium, which is the most obvious nutrient needed for good bone health. Moreover, aside from calcium, date syrup also has vitamin B6, vitamin A, and vitamin K, resulting in solid bone development. Since dates are high in magnesium, they provide powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, which can help relieve things like joint pain between the bones.

Heals your heart and mind

Magnesium is a powerful nutrient found in date syrup to reduce the risk of heart disease. According to a study, consuming 100mg of magnesium a day can reduce stroke risk by almost 10%. Additionally, dates have high levels of antioxidants, which help prevent atherosclerosis or clogged arteries and stimulate the removal of cholesterol from arterial cells. This study found that eating dates daily reduced cholesterol levels and oxidative stress caused by free radicals in the body. As for the mind, research has found that a diet rich in dates, pomegranates and figs could reduce the effects of Alzheimer's disease, which is caused by progressive brain degeneration.

Given are the perks of consuming date syrup. As a fruit, it contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. It is unique to other sweeteners in the process required to obtain it. It is not honey, it is not maple syrup, and although it is a fruit, it is not prepared as a fruit concentrate either. Honey, as we know, is produced by bees, and maple sap comes from maples and is boiled in syrup. With a fruit concentrate, you take freshly squeezed juice and boil it down until most of the mass has evaporated out. However, when whole dates are heated, they naturally turn into nectar, or syrup, rather than a juice coming out and separating itself from the fruit. That's why it is so rich in vitamins and nutrients.
