This young boy would turn out to be Frederick Douglass. A 12-year-old boy at the time-defying the ban on teaching slaves to read and write. Douglass knew that reading would lead to his freedom so even when he lost his teacher he was still determined to learn how to read. In just 7 years Douglass taught himself to both read & write. Learning to read and write enlightened his mind to the injustice of slavery; it kindled in his heart longing for liberty. When he was hired out to work for William Freeland, he was teaching other enslaved people to read using the Bible. Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery on September 3, 1838, using the skills he learned. He also helped slaves escape to the North while working with the Underground Railroad and after he published a newspaper called The North Star. In addition to publishing The North Star, Douglass lectured on the subject of freedom.
