The Bison (roamers of the Great Plains) were a strong part of the Apache culture. The Apache (a nomadic tribe) hunted and ate Bison meat, and used the hides as protective clothing.

Origins of the Apache Tribe: a mobile society

The Apache tribe originated from areas in Alaska, Canada, and parts of the American Southwest, around the 1500's. They were one of the many nomadic tribes roaming the Great Plains until 1908. They roamed as far south as Mexico. The name "Apache" comes from the Zuni word meaning "enemy", but the Apache called themselves Inde or Nide meaning, "the people"

Apache Interaction w/the Spaniards

Around the 1730's, the Apache Indians began to battle with the Spaniards. The battles were long and often resulted in many deaths. Finally in 1743 a Spanish leader agreed to designate land to the Apache, easing the battle over land.

The Apache hunted buffalo, and used the bones as scrapers and needles for the hides (making the hides into clothing/shelter). They collected minerals such as salt from the desert, and gathered materials to exchange with neighboring tribes, such as the Pueblo. They used simple wood frames, hide, and brush to create homes called wickiups.

The Apache were one of the first tribes to learn how to ride and use horses. Due to their high mobility across the region, horses played a huge part in their lives.

The Apache traded with neighboring tribes such as the Pueblos. They traded what they had, buffalo hides, salt, tallow and meat, for pottery, cotton blankets, turquoise, corn and other goods. The struggled to survive due to the desert environment and reduction in game. They went after buffalo and deer, and planted seeds, sometimes returning to harvest them. They collected roots and berries as well. These hunter/gatherer characteristics shaped their mobile culture.

The Apache were natives of the Southwest desert, meaning they roamed areas like Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Some spread as far as Oklahoma, and are known as the Oklahoma-Apaches (they are still present today). They hunted the animals around them (deer, buffalo, antelope) and gathered roots, berries, nuts and seeds. The climate has lot's of wind and there are grasslands and vast deserts. There are cold winters and hot summers.
