Transgender means a person’s gender identity differs from the gender they were assigned at birth. Cisgender means that a person identifies with the gender that they were assigned at birth. These discriminators typically abuse trans people physically, verbally, and mentally. Some of the main reasons people discriminate against trans people is religious beliefs, ignorance, or lack of exposure to anything besides cisgender people. Discrimination against transgender people can arise anywhere. While we were walking, we passed by a man that very aggressively asked for the time. As a New Yorker, I ignored him and kept walking. My friend stopped and gave him the time from his watch. The man then demanded “Guy or girl?” My friend told him to “f--k off” I was still walking as this happened, so I didn’t have a lot of time to process what he said. Then, out of nowhere, the man was attacking my friend. Before I could dial 911, the man had disappeared. We stood there in shock. After I had gotten back home, my friend and I came to the conclusion that the man was asking if I was a guy or a girl, because my friend is cisgender. I was especially confused because I had my mask and hood on, so it was hard to see my face and hard to tell if I was transgender. The main cause is discrimination. People may discriminate because of religion, ignorance, or lack of exposure to other gender identities. Discrimination of any form can lead to abuse and harm to many transgender people and their families or people that support them. It may even lead to death.  Many transgender people have faced so much abuse that violence against trans people was declared an epidemic in 2019 by the American Medical Association. Discrimination can also happen in the workplace. Unfortunately, workplace discrimination is very common. More than ¾ of transgender people have been discriminated against in the workplace. As a result, more than 1 in 4 trans people have lost their jobs due to discrimination. Because many transgender people have lost their jobs or quit because of discrimination, poverty rates have skyrocketed. Transgender people are over 2x likely to live in poverty. Black trans people are 3x as likely, and Hispanic trans people are 3 1/2x as likely to live in extreme poverty. Housing also plays a huge role. More than 1 in 5 trans people have been discriminated against when looking for housing. More than 1 in 10 transgender people have been evicted because of how they represent themselves. Because they have such a hard time finding a home, many become homeless. Even though there are many problems, there is a lot that we can do. For example, there is not a lot of good representation for transgender people around the world. To help solve this dilemma, you can ask your local library to invest in some books that show trans representation. Transgender organizations aren’t getting enough donations/funding, too. You can solve this by donating to a trans organization, like Gender Rights Maryland. It's a non-profit that will "aid in the advancement, achievement and protection of the civil rights of trans people through electoral involvement, grassroots organizing, coalition building and direct legislative advocacy."-  Gender Rights Maryland. Another issue for trans people is mental illnesses, typically body and gender dysphoria. You can help someone by confirming their gender. If you know a trans person that you want to help, you can take them shopping to look for new clothes that fit their true gender identity. Finally, most transgender people have an issue with medicine. Medicine like estrogen (the female hormone) and testosterone (the male hormone) costs a lot of money, and sometimes trans people need help paying for it.
