A lot of soccer and football fields use it (houses and yards are starting to use it as well) because it's a lot easier to maintain other than having someone constantly take care of it. As helpful as it is, it has a ton of very toxic chemicals. If a sport arena doesn't get much sunlight, the grass would die due to not enough nutrients and a professional football field would have dead grass. Fake grass (synthetic turf) is very beneficial.
