📚 As an enthusiastic French teacher and advocate of international-mindedness, I am thrilled to share our year-long plan for the IB PYP program! Our goal is to nurture global citizens who embrace cultural diversity, show empathy, and become responsible leaders in our interconnected world. 🌍

🎒 Trimester 1: Implementation
In this trimester, we will introduce our students to the rich tapestry of French-speaking cultures. We will engage in interactive discussions, explore traditions, arts, and history, fostering respect for differences and appreciation for heritage. Through the French Language we will be able to Travel in Each continent of the word.

🌈 Trimester 2: Activities
During this term, we'll establish language exchange programs, connecting our students with French-speaking peers from various countries. Through virtual communication, we'll enhance language skills, build global friendships, and encourage sharing of cultural backgrounds. 🗣️✉️

🎯 Trimester 3: Learning Goals
In the final trimester, we will delve into multicultural literature, examining works by authors with unique perspectives. Our aim is to promote critical thinking about global issues and nurture empathy for people from diverse backgrounds. 📚💭

Throughout the year, we'll also invite guest speakers, collaborate with schools worldwide, and celebrate international days, further strengthening our students' international-mindedness.

1-      Reading the new paper ( Local and Global) News from all around the word. We do get the newspaper daily at school, I could start keeping them in the classroom for students to go through. They could be asked to share one piece of information that they found interesting and discuss whether its something they’ve ever thought about or wondered. IN sharing the planet, we do talk about Global warming, maybe students can see what we are doing locally to help fight global warming and then compare it to what other countries are doing. This way they will be able to what is affecting other countries and how they are working. I can start this on my own, in my class room and then share the idea with my colleagues so that if they want to they can do it to.

This would be a short term strategy as it is quite easy to implement in the class room. I can make this change alone.

I would know if this is working through student discussions ( when they are able to connect local and global contexts) 

2-      Another strategy would be cultural exchange- many of the participants have mentioned it in their responses. I think it is a very good idea. With people from various cultures and backgrounds being invited to speak to the students (online or in person), they guests could be requested to dress up in their cultural dress and bring/show some of the food that is famous in their culture (their cuisine), they could probably incorporate music and dance as well. This will give students a closer look at different cultures and widen their awareness/knowledge of cultures from around the world- especially those students who have not travelled or don’t have access to such platforms.

Or even a traveler could be invited to speak to students. To share their experiences in different countries.

For something like this to be carried out- collaboration with the school team (teachers/coordinators/admin) would be vital, I would probably not be able to make this change alone, as they could probably know people from different cultures, maybe relatives visiting from other countries.

This would be long term, I think it can be short term too, as it requires planning such as finding for relevant guest speakers and seeing to when they would be able to speak to students. Again, I think through student discussion I would know if they plan is working.

International Food Day: Organize an international food day where students can try dishes from different countries, promoting cultural understanding through cuisine. 

Classroom Maps and Globes: Display maps and globes in the classroom to introduce the concept of different countries and their locations. 

Cultural Dress-Up Day: Organize a cultural dress-up day where students can wear traditional clothing from different cultures. 

Community Connections: Invite parents or family members from different cultural backgrounds to share their customs and traditions with the class.  

 

While you can initiate most of these activities in your classroom, collaboration with other kindergarten teachers and parents will enhance the impact of the plan. They can also contribute ideas, resources, and support to create a more comprehensive international-mindedness approach. 

This plan is both short-term and long-term. In the short term, students will have exposure to diverse cultures and develop basic understandings of different perspectives. In the long term, these experiences will lay the foundation for a more inclusive and globally aware mindset as they continue their education. 

To assess the effectiveness of the plan, observe students' engagement and excitement during international-mindedness activities. Regular discussions with students and parents will provide valuable feedback on the impact of the strategies implemented in the classroom.
