Three Plans for Reconstruction (Period 1) by Michael Drayne

Which of these three plans do you think would have been the most effective at bringing the Southern states back into the Union? Why? Or would you mix and match the plans, taking parts of each to create a hybrid plan?
Directions: 1) Post why you support one of the plans; 2) Comment on another student's post and provide substantive feedback. ("I agree b/c..." "I disagree b/c..." "I like how your plan..." "Have you considered x or y..."

I think that Lincoln's plan will work the best to get the south back into the union because his plan with what to do with the Southerners was much more generous than the other two. Also only 10% of the voters in a state had to agree to the terms in order to make it back into the union. The other two plans required much more work to make it back into the union. Lastly, Lincoln's plan with what to do about the Confederate leaders was the most generous. Since Lincoln's plan was both the easiest to get back into the union, and the kindest to the people they were admitting back in, the southerners would be more likely to want to enter the union under his plan.

I think Andrew Johnson’s plan would help the nation come back together the most. I first ruled out the Radical Republicans’ plan because although it was the one most favorable to me, Southerners would be heavily against it and not want to rejoin the Union as a result of it. I also quickly got rid of Lincoln’s plan because he had no thoughts on what to do with newly freed African Americans, and I believe this would raise a lot of issues and questions he wouldn't be able to answer or solve. Johnson’s plan was a good one because it supported the 13th amendment and had a good way of readmitting the states that had seceded back into the country. He was also a Tennessean, so Southerners could see him as one of them and be more inclined to reunite with the Union. Even though I don’t like his view on what to do with Freedmen, I believe his plan is the most effective one to lure Southerners back in.

I believe that Lincolns plan will be the most effect to bring the nation back together. Lincolns plan will bring the nation back together quickly and in an orderly fashion. Unlike Johnson's plan, he plans to let people off to avoid further conflict. Interestingly Lincoln also has a plan to abolish slavery and readmit the south as part of the union. So, I believe that Lincoln's plan is the most effective because of his plan to abolish slavery, readmit the south and avoid further conflict by pardoning high ranking confederate leaders.

I think that Andrew Johnson's plan would be the most effective at bringing the Southern states back into the Union. This plan allows all southerners who took the oath in Lincoln's plan to be pardoned, except for military officers. This plan also only allowed Southern states back into the Union once they ratified the 13th amendment, ensuring that the Southern states would follow federal law. Johnson also had a plan for the freed African Americans, unlike Lincoln, and he wasn't proposing that the South would be governed by the military, which many Southerners would dislike, making them not want to join the Union again.

I think this plan would have been the most effective at bringing the Southern states back into the Union. It supposedly ends as fast as possible to allow minimal resistance from the South before they rejoin the Union, and he does it in a forgiving fashion that doesn't strictly oppose how Southerners think. The way he forgives them is by making them sign an oath of loyalty that makes them obey the law, with high ranking Confederate leaders and military officials temporarily being excluded from this. He makes it easy for the South emotionally to join the Union, and makes it easy for them physically, as he only requires 10% of the population of a state to swear an oath of loyalty and legally abolish slavery.

I support a mixing of the Radical Republican’s plan and Abraham Lincoln's plan. I agree with Lincoln that to reunite the country southern states have to be readmitted to the Union (with conditions). I also think the 10 percent rule would be helpful to make sure southerners were ready to be citizens again. That said, I think one condition to their readmission should be the full granting of rights to African Americans (as stated in the Radical Republican’s plan).

His plan was generous and forgiving towards the Southerners, meaning that they would probably support Lincoln's plan the most. Johnson's Plan and the Radical Republican's Plan had "harsher" rules and would be less favorable towards Southerners. Lincoln's plan required only 10% of voters to swear on oath of allegiance, and he ignored calls to punish the South. They would most likely join the Union in the most effective way, under Lincoln's plan.

Although the intent was revenge, the plan would have made sure that the South was fully ready to completely accept the new laws. The South had just been at war with the Union mainly concerning the new laws that the Union had made, so using the military to make sure that no more states or civilians started rebelling again would have been effective. Also, with the military at hand, it would have been much easier to take the big steps like granting African Americans citizenship and the right to vote.

He only required ten percent of voters to swear an oath of allegiance and to abolish slavery in the Southern states in order for it to be admitted back into the union, and was the most forgiving. This would ensure that the reunification of Southern States into the union was quicker, more efficient, and most practical. While I personally prefer the radical Republican party's plan in terms of the rights they promised to give to African Americans, I feel that it would not be as effective in terms of bringing Southern states back into the Union.

I think that the mixing of Lincoln's plan and the Radical Republicans plan would be most effective in reuniting the South and North, and helping African Americans move forward and gain rights. Lincoln is most driven by a want to bring back the South and move forward without pettiness and revenge, plus he has no plan to control the South with military or punish it's leader. However, I do not believe he is doing enough to help and protect the rights of the new free African Americans. The Radical Republican plan will ensure that they are assimilated into society, and given their full rights (including be able to vote).

I think Lincoln's plan was the best out of the three because it was a simple and quick way to get the Southern states to rejoin the Union. It also ensures that they will rejoin the Union and it didn't punish them to heavily. It also forces the Southerners to comply and focus on larger problems.

I would mix all of them because lincons plan only needs 10% of the vote, the radical republican plan helps give african americans rights, and johnson was from the south so he could lure the south back into the union.

I would combine Lincoln's plan and Johnson's. This would ensure the South is dealt with but not harshly punished, as that would deter Southerners from truly trying to integrate back into the Union. Lincoln's kindness combined with Johnson's determination creates a good plan that can be easily carried out, and the South would be more likely to conform

I believe that Lincoln's plan is the most effective at bringing back the Union because Lincoln wanted to unite the country and his plan was simple, quick and effective. He offered forgiveness to some southerners which was part of reconstructing the country. Also, the other plans were much more complicated and less reliable as Lincoln's.
