In the first speech about plastic, the lady kept emphasizing it is "our" resposibility to say no to plastic. All the issuses she provided that the hotel devoted themselves in are mostly educational events, and can attract tourists to come. These are about the perception aspect of environmental problem. But, when it comes to financial aspect, for example, when I pointed out it may be economic problems for the small stalls at night market to upgrade their bags to biodegradable plastics, she kept emphasizing that "we" need to say no to plastic: reducing demand on demand side instead of making improvement on the supply side. It really gives me a feeling just like Apple company: saying "we" need to focus on environmental protection, then stop providing charger in the box of new iphones.

But it is not totally their fault, since this is the nature of what they are doing: business for profit. For a hotel group, they have done as much as possible to meet SDG 2030. Many cases, plastic issues i mentioned for example, is a systematic problem that huge change in supply chain is needed, and this should also be the responsibility of the government: to lead the project of supply chain renovation by implementing eco-friendly technology, and publish certain policy of encouragement of limitation in environmental issues. Panyan tree group can provide or sell reusable straws to increase customers' awareness in daily business, this can on one hand maintain customers' experience, on the other hand can spread concept of reducing plastic more widely.

He also mentioned that he used to do some business with latex mattresses. But during the covid, he lost his business and became a restaurant manager. However, the income was equal as the former one.

The third thing is in the post-covid-19 era, the tourism business such as restaurants bring a lot of job opportunities. Except him, most of other staffs there are from mainland Thai.

I totally agree with her that we should say “no” to plastic. But I think maybe only some high rank corporates and consortiums can do things like that. For they can buy expensive machines to reduce pollution or donate money to the relevant field, like environmental fund or environmental think tank. Also there customers may also be social elites and have strong pro-environment behaviors.

But when focusing on whole Phuket Island tourism, it also has a huge market in mass tourism just like we have seen in Night Market. Many petty dealers use plastic bowls and straws because of convenience , economical and time-saving.

So I wonder if it's elitist condescension to say no to plastic. Whether ordinary or bottom tourism industry participants can truly achieve both environmental awareness and environmental behavior. Whether there should be more tolerance for ordinary tourism participants.
