-Rex Walls- Father, who thinks he is always in control and will be rich with gold some day.  He is a drunk and often does not have self-control. 


-Brian Walls-Younger brother who believes in his older sisters and typically fights life's difficulties with Jeannette. 


-Rose Mary Walls- She is an artist who also writes poetry and her philosophies of life. She occasionally takes up a teaching position, but typically uses her mother authority as an excuse to not have to work. 


-Lori Walls- A very mature lady who earns her way out of the family just like Jeannette. She is known as the "smart one" She also isn't afraid to stand up to her parents if needed.  


-Maureen Walls- She is the youngest of the four and doesn't grow up with motive to escape poverty like the rest of her siblings do so instead she becomes a rebellious druggie and eventually moves to California, where who knows how she makes a living. 

Grandma Smith- Rose Mary's mother who constantly scolds the Walls parents for living the way they do and is always sorry for the kids and would rather they come live with her. 

Billy-  The boy who raped Jeannette before she was even 12 and knew what rape even meant. 

Erma- A grouchy woman who hated the Walls family and being called grandma. She scolded the children as often as she could and talked badly about black people while knowing Jeannette was friends with them.

Las Vegas- This is where they were usually at casinos eating glorious meals and such.  
Grandma Smith's House- Where Rose Mary was constantly unhappy at Grandma Smith for bickering about their horrible lifestyle, but Jeannette loved it their because there was always food and her hair was always combed.

New York City- Where Jeannette finally goes to college and earns a well paying job and she finally matures and settles with the fact that her parents will always be homeless and helpless.

Page 158- If you don't work together, nothing will end up successfully. Even if you try your very hardest. This theme symbolizes the hard work Jeannette put in to try and make the house look nicer, but alone she couldn't paint the whole house, so it ended up worse than before.

page 141- The theme of this page is trial and error. The reason being is as Jeannette gets bullied constantly she knows that doing nothing won't protect her and that physical defense won't protect her so she tried to mentally fight back by spitting history of their race, but they laughed anyway.

(190) "No one had planned this arrangement, and no rules enforced it. That was just the way it was" This shows how no matter how "free" the US is, everywhere, even when everyone is as poor as the other, there will always be discrimination or segregation in one form or another.
(200) "It was the distinction that mattered the most, practically the only one that did matter. But I knew that boys were dangerous. They'd say they loved you, but they were always after something." Jeannette silently longs for a boys love and attention, but she knows that most boys she knows aren't looking for a life together.
(201) "She was storybook-beautiful girl, with long blond hair and startling blue eyes. She spent so much of her time with friends, she often didn't feel a part of the family" This is odd because Maureen, being the pretty one grew up to be the unsuccessful one, so maybe not having friends is another reason as to why the other Walls children had so much motivation to be better.
(210)"'Have I ever let you down?' Dad asked." This is by far a very ironic quote, because of course Rex has let them down countless times and he still believes he holds authority.
228- "'New York is  sorry-ass sinkhole' he said more than once. 'Filled with faggots and rapists" Another ironic quote from Rex, because Welch is also full of rapists and faggots, and maybe Lori and Jeannette were finally old enough to realize most of dads teachings were skewed.
268- "'I will by God kick his butt so hard, his asshole will be up between his shoulder blades.'" At least Rex shows how much he cares about his children.
269- "'Where are the values I raised you with?'" Rose Mary says this as if she raised Jeannette perfectly and that living in poverty and starvation is what's right. 
287- "'Every household' she said, 'needs one piece of furniture in really bad taste" This is almost ironic because if they ever did have furniture, of course it was in bad taste and what would she know about what a household needs anyway?
288- "'Life with your father was never boring'" While Rex hardly ever did anything to support the family, it is true that life with him was indeed never boring.
