"I never talked about my involvement with Nora to new friends, and the number of people who knew my secret remained very small. As time passes, I gradually relaxed inside my head. I started to feel as though there were no second shoe, and it had all been a crazy interlude. I thought I understood risk. I considered my time abroad with Nora a crash course on the realities of the world, how ugly things can get, and how important it is to stay true to yourself and even in the midst of an adventure or experiment. In my travels I had encountered all kinda of people whose dignity seemed to have a price-widely variable- and I thought that next time I had better set my price higher than anyone would pay."(17)

I picked this passage because it sums up the beginning first 30 pages and most of the memoir. In the beginning she starts out with Nora and gets caught up in the adventures Nora takes her on. She finally realizes how dangerous they really are and gets herself out before it's too late. She says that she has lost herself, which i predict most of the book will be about. It will be about her finally finding herself while she is in prison. Even if it means she's different then what other people expect such as her parents and boyfriend. I am excited to discover how the author changes and evolves throughout the book.

I decided to choose Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman because I watched the Netflix series and I wanted to know how different the T.V. show was from the book. I've heard a lot about how the show over exaggerated things so I'm excited to learn the truth Usually when movies are compared to books, the book is always better. So, I am hoping the book is even better than tho show. I am also very interested in learning about how people are treated in prison and all of the different things that could go wrong. I wasn't very excited to have to read a non-fiction book, but this book could actually be very good.

"I had only the most tenuous idea of what might happen next, but I knew that I would have to be brave. Not foolhardy, not in love with risk and danger, not making ridiculous exhibitions of myself to prove that I wasn't terrified- really, genuinely brave. Brave enough to be quiet when quiet was called for, brave enough to observe before flinging myself into something, brave enough to not abandon my true self when someone else wanted to seduce or force me in a direction I didn't want to go, brave enough to stand my ground quietly. I waited an unquantifiable amount of time while trying to be brave." (35)

This passage really stands out to me because it just says a lot and its spelled out really simply. Piper Kerman says straight forward that to survive in prison, you have to be quiet at most times and avoid all of your normal instincts no matter what. No matter how much you might want to do something for fu or for the thrill, don't. Now that she is in prison she needs to be brave but a different kind of brave people are used to. Not fearless, not prepared to do anything, but the kind that is able to sit back and be quiet. It really stands out because being quiet can sometimes be the hardest thing to do in situations.

I picked this passage because it shows how much peoples views can change in prison or where ever you are. For example in your own town, where ever your comfortable, you're fine with everyone. But then once you get out of your element and into somewhere strange all your views can change. Even if your not racist and have nothing against anyone, in prison especially, you will be extra scared of anyone who isn't your own race because that is how things are run. We are taught to be scared of things that are different when really, things are only scary if we make them to be.

Throughout Pipers time in jail, many of her friends visited her and barely any cared that she was even in jail. In this it says she's seen her mom more while she was in jail than in past years. What I thought would happen, especially from where she came from, was that her friends would feel uncomfortable and never visit or think differently of her. I thought that jail would be an embarrassment for Piper and her friends nd family but it didn't seem to affect any except for her fiancé.

I find that music, depending on what type you're listening to, can be a major stress reliever. This passage proves this by saying that even when she was in jail and things got really bad, music could make it better. I'm a big believer in music being very healing and that it can help people in a lot of situations. It can make people feel different emotions depending on the genre. I love how big of a thing it is in making Pipers day better and also how it reminds her of her past.

I liked how she related back to Lord of the Flies which was part of the Freshman english curriculum. I think the big thing about prison is everyone tries to avoid thinking about it. The worst part easily isn't the incarnation but the fact that you'd be deprived of what you normally use everyday. Consider going not a day but a year without a phone, washing machine, or hair dryer. A lot of people would consider this torture, but in jail it's normal. The simple necessities are things most people don't think about you really needing until you're forced to not have them.

It's also important because before this Piper says this is the first time she has seen herself physically. Picture having to go years without being able to see yourself. Apparently it is a huge and celebrated moment and it is very much appreciated. It reminds all the inmates that there will be a day they get out. I thought there would be some problems between inmates when one is let out because they would be jealous and angry they can't get out as well. It seems that a lot more friends are made in prison then enemies, at least for Piper. This allows people getting released an amazing occasion.

I picked this passage on the final week of padlet because it shows she finally gets out of jail and gets what she wants. I like the last line "No one could stop me." because it means so much more than its literal meaning. It also means she finally has the freedom to do whatever she wants. She's out of prison and is appreciating being able to run towards Larry and do whatever she wants with him, which is what she's been craving the whole. This passage ends the book with happy feelings and I think it's a great passage to end this padlet with.
