Rationale: This research question is very important, as it aims to study the many factors that contribute to student engagement during independent work time. I came to this question as one worthy of research when in the first days and weeks of student teaching it was obvious that students were struggling to hand in work complete and on time. I wanted to figure out what types of assignments students were able to complete the most, so that I can assign that style of work more often. Data Collection Method

• Student Artifacts 
  • I will collect all data relating to my research question, the first main method being through collection of student artifacts. Examples of student work are one of the most powerful methods for teacher researchers, and in this context student artifacts are assessed to analyze student engagement. 
  • Assessed completed work will be utilized as evidence of student engagement, as it shows that students were active participants during independent work time. 
• Observation Journal 
  • Additionally, another method of data collection will be through keeping a log/journal that will allow me to reflect on student engagement while the class is independently working. This log/journal will help me identify which trends are ongoing throughout the time I am researching 
• Survey
  • I will administer a student interest survey to students in order to gain information about the types of assignments they feel the most confident in completing.

In these assignments students are responding to prompts about videos or readings with their own thoughts and ideas. These types of assignments often have "no wrong answer" and their is no student concern over answering incorrectly.
2. Students more often completed types of assignments that encompassed an element of student choice. One of the most completed assignments was the "Spent Activity" where students completed a choose your own adventure style simulation, and responded after that. This assignment kept students actively engaged because they were constantly having to make educated choices. I believe that this is because when students feel that they are in charge of their learning, and often times have chosen something that they feel comfortable completing.
3. There was no major correlation between the ability of students to complete an assignment, whether it be administered digitally, physically, or both. I believe that this is a teacher research question that I will continue conducting and collecting data as I begin my teaching career. This is especially true when considering the question on a smaller scale with each individual student.
