Date: 10/15/24

Information: Florida is left with a harsh aftermath of Hurricane Milton. The Alafia River has flooded homes and in Hillsborough County while heavy rains on the north side of Florida have caused more than 10 inches of rain. St.Johns River and Alafia River are both still at extremely harmful stages of floods although they are going back down.

Important People: Allison Chinchar, a CNN Meteorologist is the one reporting about the flooding and sharing certain statistics, although all Floridians and people residing in Florida are being greatly affected.

Important Statistics: The Alafia River has recently reached up to 24.34 ft but it has gone down and is currently at 20.2 ft. Meanwhile, St. Johns near Deland on the eastern half of the state went up from 4.8 ft to 5.9 ft.

Potential argumentative question?

Are these floods only damaging (no positive impacts)? They want the island to be unified with China's mainland.

Important People: This involves The Chinese Communist Party (who are making these strong claims), the democracy of Taiwan, which is denying the claims, and even the U.S. due to their (unofficial) relationship with Taiwan; they share economic and commercial links.

Important Statistics: A democracy of over 24 million people in Taiwan has rejected China's territorial claims over the nation and has referred to the drills as an "unreasonable provocation" by Beijing.

Potential argumentative question?

Should Taiwan be considered as a part of China?

Date: 10/28/24

Information: A robot has been invented that can and has played the cello alongside a symphony orchestra. It was programmed using the musical score that was written for Sweden's Malmo live concert hall on October 17th, which was where the robot played.

Important People: The robot was designed by Frederick Gran, a researcher and composer. Jacob Mühlrad is a Swedish composer who was extremely impressed and curious as to how the Robot can deal so effectively with strings. His musical notation was transcribed as code for the robot.

Opinions relating to this: Jacob Mühlrad believes that this can be a new art form/platform but that this performing robot doesn't have the capacity to replace live musicians.

Potential argumentative question?

Are robots becoming a threat to society due to their ability to take away jobs (in this case, musicians' jobs)?

Date: 11/08/24

Information: People in California have been given a red flag warning relating to the strong and powerful winds that have caused wildfires to expand. There are many huge fires that are difficult to put out in different areas of California, putting people in these areas at risk.

Important People: The people from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area are the ones who have been warned; some have had to evacuate due to fire entering their neighborhoods and, in some cases, burning down their homes. Firefighters play an important role in this as they are responsible for putting out these fires and are trying their best to do so (although it's complicated due to the strong winds).

Important Statistics: The number of people living in the places that have received this warning altogether is 25 million people. The fire, in just a few hours, spread to more than 14,000 acres, and California's governor, Gavin Newsome, estimated that about 3,500 homes/business structures have been reportedly affected by these fires.

Potential argumentative questions?

Are red flag fire warnings actually effective? This showed the planet's beautiful mixture of colors and patterns. The news pointed out how it looks incredibly similar to Vincent van Gogh's painting, The Starry Night.

Important People: This involves the astronauts/astronomers who were on the Juno Spacecraft and were able to photograph Jupiter. All of NASA's workers and all astronomers in general are also important as they are the ones who can investigate this further to find essential, new information.

Important Impact: The technology that allows astronomers to approach other planets is impactful as the video says it allows for "Countless revelations about the inner workings of this massive and mysterious planet." Learning about other planets is vital to advance our scientific understanding of space and make life-changing discoveries.

Potential argumentative question? Is it safe to continue getting closer to the planets?

Date: 11/21/24

Information: In Hong Kong, forty-five people were arrested as they were convicted of conspiracy to commit subversion. This means that they wanted to overthrow their country's government, but since they were caught, they were all sentenced to fifty months to ten years in prison.

Important People: The news said that this group of forty-five people consisted of "lawmakers, activists, unionists, and journalists." This includes two very popular pro-democracy figures in Hong Kong, such as Joshua Wong, who was, according to the video, the "poster child for the movement."

Reactions to being convicted: Most of the forty-five defendants pled guilty in order to reduce their sentence in prison. The judges also communicated that the charges would have been even more serious and intense if their plan had been fully carried out/if they hadn't been stopped.

Potential argumentative question? Are these punishments adequate for the crimes?

Date: 11/22/24

Information: Target, one of the most popular retailers, has communicated that they're selling less than usual. They expect sales to rise less than they tend to during the holiday season, which is very rare for their business.

Important People: The people who play a significant role in this occurrence are Target shoppers who aren't visiting or buying from the store. The CEO of Target, Brian Cornell, is being affected since his business is not thriving; this means that his income might start to decrease, which, due to a domino effect, will cause the Target employees' wages to decline as well.

Reasoning: People are questioning the possible reasons that are causing this to happen. They wonder if it's because people shop elsewhere or don't want to spend money. Walmart has more sales than Target due to its lower and reasonable prices. It's expected that Target will improve for next year.

Potential argumentative question?

Should Target accommodate their prices to match Walmart's?

Date: 12/02/24

Information: Notre Dame's roof was burned down and severely damaged five years ago in April 2019 due to a large fire. The cause of the fire is unknown but it is a common belief that it was accidental. It has been consecutively worked on for the past five years as workers have been recovering, fixing, and improving this beautiful and culturally significant cathedral.

Important People: Emanuel Macron was the French president during this incident, and he set a goal to repair all the damages and basically rebuild this cultural landscape in just five years. Its grand opening will be on the 7th of December, but the president has already toured the cathedral and personally thanked all those who participated in what he calls the "construction project of the century."

Important Prices: Alongside the hard work this renovation required, it also required a lot of money. Its cost was roughly around 700 million euros, which is about 737 million dollars. This money came purely from donations rather than the government's money.

Potential argumentative question?

Do the new changes take away from the cathedral's original cultural value? Is it a good thing that all the money used for the renovation came from donations?

Related Article: https://www.friendsofnotredamedeparis.org/notre-dame-cathedral/#:~:text=The%20cathedral%20of%20Notre%20Dame,flock%20to%20this%20architectural%20marvel.

Date: 12/04/24

Information: People are becoming extremely concerned about facial recognition technologies that are controlled by artificial intelligence. This specifically refers to the technology used to recognize faces from videos or pictures as lighting and angles might cause misidentification. As time goes on, it is becoming harder to avoid as it's used in our daily activities like unlocking your phone.

Important People: All of the engineers and workers who are incorporating facial recognition or those involved in the current facial recognition systems all play extremely important roles as they are the ones who promote and rely on this technology. Everyone else is also important since everyone is having their faces scanned either by their phones, at the airport, in security footage, etc.

Important Occurrences: This has become a concern to many since, unfortunately, people have been wrongly identified and accused of crimes they did not commit. The people who build these facial recognitions can also program their algorithms to be biased and target certain groups of people more than others. Additionally, there are also concerns with respect to who has access to people's personal data (facial recognition) and what can be done with their information.

Potential argumentative question? Is it ethical to constantly be scanning peoples' faces without their consent? Should there be a legal procedure to demonstrate clear consent regarding facial scans?

Related Article: https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/feature/Pros-and-cons-of-facial-recognition#:~:text=When%20it%20works%2C%20facial%20recognition,action%20required%20from%20the%20user.

It's essential for Italy to prepare to receive this flock of people successfully.

Important People: The Pope will open the doors to St. Peter's Basilica; his primary role is being the Supreme Pastor. All Italian workers, citizens, and business owners are also essential as they have to prepare for a large number of tourists to avoid conflicts and effectively handle this overbearing amount of tourists.

Important Dates: The 2025 Jubilee begins on the 24th of December, 2025, until January 6th, 2026. This event consists of acknowledging and celebrating groundhogs that can predict the weather.

Important People: The people who play an important role in these events are everyone who gathers and celebrates Groundhog Day and the organizers of this event. Noah, from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also played an essential role by listing the most accurate groundhogs. Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog, is also critical as he has a whole team of people who protect and care for him due to his impressive abilities.

Important Statistics: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has shared its ranking of the groundhogs with the most accurate predictions. The more precise groundhog was 85% accurate in his predictions, closely followed by another groundhog that demonstrated 80% accuracy. Tied in fourth and fifth place were two groundhogs were 65% correct.

Potential argumentative question?

Is it ethical to force groundhogs into the spotlight with hundreds of cameras flashing in their face? Should this tradition be investigated due to ethical concerns regarding the groundhogs' possible distress and anxiety when put in this situation?

Related Article: https://www.reconnectwithnature.org/news-events/the-buzz/5-things-groundhogs/

This article contributes to the conversation by explaining what groundhogs are: marmots, which are very closely related to squirrels. It clarifies that “Phil” has actually been multiple groundhogs since their lifespan is about six years. Groundhogs are true hibernators, which plays a major role in their “prediction of weather”.

Date: 02/03/25

Information: College admissions are extremely unpredictable, and most students are unsure of why they got accepted into certain colleges. This podcast episode delves into Emir's unique journey of entering Harvard due to external circumstances and what he believes to be luck.

Important People: Emir is the protagonist of the story, but Miss Ames is also an important person since she was the one who saw Emir's talent and fought for his entry into The Paideia School. Rich Clark, additionally, is important since he explains common mistakes he has observed as the Director of Admissions at Georgia Tech.

Important Statistics: Only 7% (2,000 students) were accepted at Columbia University despite the 33,000 applications, and about 95% of college essays are not considered impressive. In addition, Emir was part of the 17% of white students at his school.

Potential argumentative question?

Is the college process of getting accepted or rejected considered healthy for teenagers' mental health? Should there or is there already a way to accurately calculate or predict college acceptances?

Related Article: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/lowest-acceptance-rate

This podcast talks about the unpredictability of college admission while the article shares the incredible low acceptance rates of many schools.

Date: 03/03/25

Information: This podcast discusses the importance of love being demonstrated by a mother to their child. It mentions that unconditional love involves extreme challenges, complicated decisions, perseverance, and distinct outcomes.

Important People: Daniel Solomon's story was told; he was taught affection by his adoptive mother, who didn't give up on him despite the fact that he was an orphan who struggled with accepting and giving affection due to his previous years of life lacking love. Ben Royko's story was also told; this young boy was autistic and abusive to his family, forcing his family to put him in residential care despite their attachment to him.

Logos: Harry Harlow conducted an experiment where he would give monkeys the choice of milk or a soft figure that felt like their mothers' skin. The results of this experiment demonstrated that monkeys preferred physical touch over milk, contradicting previous claims that children didn't need to feel any type of love as it would "make them weak".

Potential argumentative question?

Can unconditional love be detrimental to the people involved? Is there a healthier way to love?

Related Article: https://www.healthline.com/health/relationships/unconditional-love

This article relates to the conversation as it explores what unconditional love truly is. Unconditional love is love “without strings attached,” as described in the article. This explains why Daniel Solomon’s mother never gave up on him, and why Ben Royko’s family never stopped loving him, even though they let him go.

These people have been able to save thousands of pounds. The government and the property owners are also important as they are allowing these unused spaces to be used.

Important Statistics: There are about 1000-1500 people on a waiting list to become property guardians. The average rental in London is about $2,700 per month while buying a property costs about $635,00.

Potential argumentative question?

Should this style of housing be limited to those who make less than the average income? They have unfortunately been facing horrible power outages for a while, leaving them in uncomfortable situations.

Important People: Cuban citizens are important as they are the ones suffering the consequences of repeatedly having to live without power for multiple days. These people are dealing with, according to the video, "aging infrastructure, natural disasters, and economic uncertainty." This means that the Cuban government officials are also important as they are responsible for taking care of their country's infrastructure and economy.

Important Statistics: This is the fourth major power loss in just six months, leaving more than ten million people without power. The power outage, according to Cuban officials, was caused by a fluctuation in power.

Potential argumentative question? Should the Cuban government be blamed for these power outages? However, it has now reopened and is trying to get its tourism back.

Important People: Tourists and even some residents of Greece suffered the consequences of minor earthquakes and had to evacuate for their safety. One month later, a cruise ship heading to Greece reignited hopes for the return of tourism. Greece’s government greatly benefits from its visitors (3.4 million a year), so this road bump had a negative impact on them.

Important Statistics: From January 26th to February 22nd, the islands of Greece suffered tens of thousands of minor earthquakes that have, according to the RoR scale, a magnitude of at least one. Santorini’s location near the fault lines makes the seismic activities somewhat expected. Over just a two-week period, there were 1,200 earthquakes with magnitudes varying from 1 to 5.2.

Potential argumentative question? Will Santorini ever fully recover from these earthquakes?

Date: 04/07/25

Information: Many states in the U.S. have been banning/restricting phone use in schools due to their harmful impacts on mental health. They have also been banned since they significantly distract many students.

Important People: Students from a high school in Arlington, Virginia, were interviewed by Pamela Brown. This high school is only one out of many that have added this new policy. All students experiencing this phone ban in their school (including students at ASA) are essential as they have had to adjust and adapt to this change; the high school's administration and workers are also vital as they can measure the effectiveness of this policy.

Opinions relating to this: Most of the students said that there were things they liked and disliked about the phone ban at their school. They found themselves paying more attention in class, having deeper discussions with classmates, fighting less, and playing games. They mentioned that people are concerned about lockdowns since students won't be able to contact their loved ones in case of an emergency.

Potential argumentative question? Is creating a barrier between a student and their phone effective?
