Please include your first name so I know who you are! en-us 2018-05-07 03:02:07 UTC 2025-10-25 17:40:10 UTC hello@padlet.com carla_fundakbonsma https://padlet.com/carla_fundakbonsma/kwe9c20wvwtq/wish/564759411 Something I already knew about the parliament buildings was that the House of Commons is decorated in different colours than the Senate chambers are.  This is done on purpose - to show that they serve different jobs when it comes to running a government.  I also knew that the section of who IS in government (the party) was designed to be "a sword's length away" from the party(ies) of opposition.  This was to make sure that originally, when people got mad and drew their swords at each other, they wouldn't actually hurt one another.

One thing I did NOT KNOW about was that there really is a hidden  escape door/chamber built in to the leader of opposition's office.  Can you say last minute get away anyone??!  Who knew running a country could get so exciting?!

I wonder what the major renovations now look like.  They have been trying to update our aging Parliament building for the last few years - in order to restore it to the original building and structure.  I suspect that it took MANY engineers, experts etc. to make this happen. I wonder how much it COST to do so?? Millions? Hundreds of millions?  What do you think?

one thing I didn't  know about the parliament buildings is that it burned down Feb 3 1916. specifically the parliament hill building caught on fire.

One thing I didn't know is what the leaders at each level were called. Federal - Prime Minister, Provincial - Premier and Municipal  is Mayor.

One thing I didn't know was how in  the portrait of queen Victoria, the crown was cut out because during the 1916 fire the portrait was too large to fit out of the door. It was cut out of the gold frame and rolled up which is why her crown was cut in half in the portrait. that portrait is the only portrait that has the crown cut out.

Our government is determined by a vote.  Anyone who is over 18 can vote for our government.


Something I didn't know:
That the federal government works out of Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
I also didn't know that the Federal government was in charge of the money in Canada.  I thought the Municipal government did it.

I wonder:
If I can go to Ottawa to visit the Parliament Buildings!! It would be cool to see where the government works.

Something I already knew was that the leader of the Federal government is the Prime Minister the leader of the Provincial government is the Premier and the leader of the Municipal government is the Mayor/Reeve.

One thing I didn’t know is how tricky Minority government is, I also didn’t know how important our vote is.

I wonder why the parliament building is in Ottawa and I also wonder who is in charge of making the decision of giving you a license.

I knew that the Queen is still recognized in Canada as Head of State but with limited powers. I also knew that Canada is a Parliamentary Democracy.

I didn't know what an Oligarchy was. Now I know that an Oligarchy is a small group of rich people who rule a country.

I wonder if the world will ever get rid of all its Dictators someday.

I knew that there were different names for the different levels of government representatives for the Federal, Provincial and Municipal offices.

I didn't know that the levels were called MP on the Federal level, MLA/MNA/MHA/MPP on the Provincial level and Councillor on the Municipal level.

I wonder if anyone I know will ever run for a place in the government. I like being a leader but I don't like all that pressure. Maybe I will be an actress or an artist.

I didn't know that a Member of Parliament has three jobs: Legislating, Representing and Serving. They work really hard and sometimes don't see their families during the week.

I wonder how many women are in each level of Government.

I knew that our elections are determined by how many votes a political party gets.

I didn't know that there are 338 MPs and 338 elections around the entire country. And in order to be a Majority government, a party needs at least 170 votes.

I wonder what will happen at our next election and I wonder if the pandemic will interfere with how things go.
