She believes she is trapped and can never escape her life, which is probably why she saw this woman trapped in the wallpaper. This is supported by the fact that she thinks that this shadow is a woman she does not know, but then she believes it is herself trapped in the wallpaper. So, she rips the wall paper from the wall and tells herself she has escaped. Furthermore, she rips the wallpaper off the wall and then tells herself that she isn't stuck anymore and can escape.
