For being religious person( clergyman), Mr. Collins sure knows how to boast and think of highly of himself( he believes he is self important). The reason he believes he is “high in rank” is because of his close connections with Lady Catherine De Burgh. Austen portrays religion in this way because looks down on it, it is as if thinks religious people will say one thing and do another(pg.157-158) Irony

Charlotte’s marriage to Collins was just because she’s wanted to be provided for and have her own home. It seems like some middle class woman don’t really have a say in who they marry or why they marry. Also there us really no love in middle class marriages ( besides Lizzy and Jane), marriages like Lydia’s, Charlotte’s and even Mrs. Bennet’s do not really have mutual love. Middle class marriages are only a way for woman to be provided for (pg.122-123). Why?

During this time period, it can be easily seen that women practically have no say in their marriages. An example would be when Mr. Collins asked Elizabeth to marry him, (104-107). Her parents had different views on this, if she weren't to marry him, Mrs. Bennet would never speak to Elizabeth again. If she were to marry him, Mr. Bennet would never speak to her again, (Ch. 20). Elizabeth did not get to have her own choice without thee being consequences. When Whicham wanted to be with Elizabeth, Mrs. Gardiner quickly shut down the idea of them being together, (142). Elizabeth finally breaks through to have her own say when she rejects Darcy, (Ch. 34)
