Topic Rationale

I can definitely relate to this topic! When I first learned about the impact of westward expansion on Native American tribes, it wasn’t until later in my education, not in 4th grade like most students. I remember how it struck me deeply, especially understanding how the government's actions shaped the lives of so many. Learning about the Trail of Tears and the forced relocation of the Cherokee was eye-opening. The emotional weight of those events really hit home for me, and it made me realize how much history influences our present-day world. Using twin texts—the storytelling side and the factual accounts—would’ve made it even more meaningful for me back then. It’s such a powerful way to learn about history from multiple perspectives.
