I've now finished the book, (but haven't been commenting about it because I don't really see the point on doing so) and the first thing I have to say, without ruining anything, is that it has a really stupid ending. It ends right in the middle of an action scene! I've said too much already... Anyway, throughout the entirety of the story, we see two opposite points of view whose blind spot is the other point of view. On the one hand, we have the white population, those who only bought houses in Arroyo Blanco Estates (translates to "White Stream) because of the amount of appreciation that will pile up. The Americans decide to completely ruin the landscape to get money by selling houses as Kyra thinks or to get inspired to continue write more newspaper columns as Delaney thinks. It's a place to live to get away from the rest of the world and get money. That's the whole reason the place was built! On the other hand, there are the Mexicans and other illegal immigrants who have crossed the border and are fugitives in the eyes of the law, but really only want a better future for those they love but don't have the money to support. The reason the white population sees the immigrant population as thieves and hobos who steal without mercy, would do anything for spare change, and don't care about anything is because that's all they see. If Delaney knew Candido and America's story and their fight for survival, the (I'm trying not to reveal anything) ending would very likely have been different... As Mays Gilliam (leading character in the comedy movie "Head of State") said "How can you help the poor if you've never been poor?" Those in the white community want the Mexicans off their property, but Delaney, as much as he wants to get rid of the Mexicans, kind of wants to help them. He felt a little sorry for them when the Council decided to shut down the labor-exchange wondering what they would do next and where they would do it. If more of the whites had Delaney's point of view towards the subject, but more so, the Mexicans would be better off. I think the labor exchange shouldn't have been shut down in the first place, when someone wants something really dirty or boring done, their going to go to the Mexicans, because they know the whites won't do it; and with the Mexicans gone, who's going to build the wall the Council's been talking about? On the Mexican side, the close of the labor-exchange is a total life changer for the worse, as if it hasn't been bad enough. They're already down to living in a cave, a little hunting, working whenever they can, and storing their money on a peanut butter jar that's stuffed under a rock. Without the labor-exchange, there's no work, which leads to no money which leads to no food, which leads to having to move somewhere else where there is the potential of work. What the whites don't realize is that if they really want to get rid of the Mexicans, you have to help them, then get them to live somewhere else. If you make it harder for them, they might go somewhere else, but as long as it's on foot, it won't be that far.

After two American men stumble upon Candidio and America's camp and destroy it, they leave a crude message for Candidio to find. The word "beaner" is a derogatory slur directed toward Mexicans. The message was clear; these white men don't like immigrants and want them to leave.

(70, 2, 4-7)
Here you can see some of Kyra's biases toward her clients and people in general.
