With his friend, Bob Sproull, he invented this first form of augmented reality device. Damocles' Sword featured a head-mounted display hanging up from the ceiling. The user encountered computer graphics that made him feel like in a different world. This system can be seen as closer than an improved version to virtual reality.

Myron Krueger was one of the next major innovations in augmented reality in 1974. The project was named Videoplace, which integrated a screen-projection system with video cameras creating shadows. This configuration made the user feel like he's in an interactive environment.

In 2000, when Hirokazu Kato of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan developed and published software called ARToolKit, an important development in augmented reality technology occurred. Through this app one could capture real-world behavior and combine them with virtual entity interactions.

It allows digital content to be viewed which is important to what the user is looking at. Then this digital content is presented in a realistic way, so it feels like part of the real world-that's called rendering. Augmented reality requires understanding the world around the user in terms of both semantics and 3D geometry. Semantics answers the “what?” question, for example recognizing the cereal box, or that there is a face in the image. Geometry answers the “where?” question, and infers where the cereal box or the face are in the 3D world, and which way they are facing.
