They are caused by tectonic plates that collide and push the surface of the Earth up. They are slowly occurring events on Earth because there are many active volcanoes that have never erupted. There can be volcanoes on Earth's surface and on the ocean floor. They can have many different shapes and can be either active or dormant, which means they are able to erupt or not.
