In the book “Restart” by Gordan Korman Chase Ambrose the main character loses his memory and attempts to return to his old life. However, he finds himself not wanting to after he learns of how he used to bully people in the past thirteen years. Therefore, he starts to make a new life by hanging around the “nerds” instead of his football friends. Once he started to gain the others' trust he felt better, comforted, and was starting to remember his past memories better. In the end he learned that people can choose to be better and your past mistakes do not justify you.

Football was a big part of Chase's life before his amnesia and it was one of the only things that instinctively came back to him. He plays it with his "friends" and also observes it and it makes him feel like he fits in some way. This symbolizes belonging.

The Painting

The painting of the blonde girl was the only thing that Chase remembered when he woke up in the hospital. This painting meant a lot to him which means it meant a lot to find it. The painting symbolizes his first memory that he can recall.

Portland Street Assisted Living Residence

The residence center in which Mr. Solway lived in is the place where Chase was supposed to be doing community service, but since he suffered a long term injury he did not have to. Nonetheless he decided to voluntarily go. That is where he met Mr. Solway who was known to be tough, but him and Chase became friends quickly and after that the Residence Center became important to Chase. It's not only because of Mr. Solway, but also because it's a place connected to his past. This place symbolizes his progression.

Chase felt lost and didn't think that he fit in, that's how I also feel when I'm in new places. One example of when I felt I didn't fit in is when I first joined Cypress Christian, however I started making new friends who helped at the start of the year and also make me laugh a lot just like Chase.

Chase has internal and external conflict when rumors of his amnesia start to spread. He faces his past self's mistakes and has to correct them with no knowledge of who his true friends are which makes it all the more hard for him. As he starts to gradually grab memories of his old life there is one memory that destroys all that he thought was true and brings light to who his true friends are.

Lesson Learned

Chase learns throughout the story that he can choose to become a better person and learns that he has to face his past self. Chase automatically thought no one was going to like him after he learned of his past and because of how some people were treating him. However, he eventually earned their trust and becomes good friends with the ones who used to not like him.

Chase struggles with his past a lot with not knowing who he his or who his true friends are. Which brings conflict to him deciding who he wants to be. This affects him in many ways like making him bring more hate to his past self instead of deciding a new path for himself.
