In art and geography, Jamaica is a distant world. For most of its history, the country's painting and sculpture developed quite independently from the rest of the Caribbean and the world. Today, Jamaican artists, especially the most progressive, remain virtually unknown abroad.
Similarly, Jamaican art shows, especially in the United States and England, feature works with minimal references to artistic movements in the rest of the world.
But a new exhibit, which can currently be viewed at the IDB Cultural Center art gallery, takes a different approach. Featuring 42 paintings, lithographs and sculptures covering the period from the last three centuries to the present, "Three Moments in Jamaican Art" examines the country's artistic achievements against the backdrop of all Western art. In doing so, it identifies three defining moments in the country's artistic development.

Source:
https://www.iadb.org/pt/noticias/tres-momentos-na-arte-jamaicana

At first - a long period of time spanning two decades of colonial rule - the artists reflect a culture that has remained stoically loyal to British traditions. Art was produced by and for a minority.
An example is Philip Wickstead, of English background. Steeped in the tradition of late baroque, rococo, and neoclassical, it was faithfully intended to document the local reality of people and places, or, as the show's catalog states, "of pride, nostalgia, and tropical humidity." .

The second moment, from 1922 to 1929, begins with the arrival of King Edna Manley in Kingston and her struggle to gain recognition of the country's diverse cultural values. And it ends with the consolidation of the People's Party in 1929, whose cultural platform included what was then called Black art as a fundamental datum for the reassessment of racial values. This period saw the "intuitive" approach to art.
