The correct and acceptable way of communicating on the internet has become known as Netiquette, the etiquette of the internet. In society now the internet is such a huge part of life, inside and outside of school, so it is important that everyone follows the guidelines to try and prevent any issues. As a future educator I am going to have my students on the internet for projects, so I would want to make sure all my students are using the internet properly rather than messing around and possibly be running into problems.

Avoid Sarcasm

When typing something to a friend, or even a stranger, there really is no way to feel the emotion behind what was being said. Since there is no way to know or feel what the person was trying to say, someone could easily misinterpret what is trying to be said and take it as something rude or offensive. In order to keep the internet a safe place then it is important that everyone feels comfortable using it, rather than scared someone will say something uncalled for, even if it was in a joking or sarcastic way.
Even if what is being said was obviously sarcasm does not mean the other people seeing it are going to think it is funny and may still take offense to it. When communicating with people on the internet it is best to say things as straight forward as possible, as well as making sure things are still polite. Overall, to try and insure a better internet environment it is best to leave out the sarcasm and just say what you actually mean.

*Identify Yourself*

The internet now makes it very easy to hide behind the screen and give the illusion that you are someone else. In society this is so scary because some people will believe the character being played on the screen which could end up getting dangerous. Kids could possibly fall for the lies and meet up with the person or say/do things they might regret. A major part of netiquette is staying safe, and making sure everyone identifies themselves for who they truly are is one way to help that.
Not only is it important to identify yourself on profiles for social media, but it is also very important to identify yourself in emails, or any other professional way of communicating. A persons email address may contain parts of their name or maybe even the whole name, but it is still important to officially say who is sending the email. It is not the job of the person receiving the email to figure out who it is from, it adds a lot of time and stress to them that they didn't need to have.
As a future teacher it is very important that our students identify themselves while submitting assignments. If a teacher gets a bunch of submissions without anyway of knowing who is who then there is no way to give out the grades that are deserves if they are just trying to figure out what paper/assignment goes to which student, adding a lot more stress to the teacher. As a whole, the classroom would flow so much smoother if the teacher could just grade them all right away without any issues.

*Be forgiving of other peoples mistakes*

One thing everyone has to remember on the internet is that we are all human. If someone makes a mistake it is easy for people to make fun of that one thing and ignore all the good things they had done. When a mistake is made is it okay to correct it, but in a nice and constructive way rather than just making fun of it.
A major factor of netiquette is how people are treating others, so making sure we are polite to others even when correcting a mistake is important. To avoid fights it is better to be respectful of others and just try to help them out. The internet is filled with people of all different ages and people who speak different languages, so if a mistake is made we should just show them the issue and help them fix it.
When it comes to being a teacher we really have to make sure our students are being respectful of each other. A lot of times students will be able to post on an online message board or something where they would be able to communicate with each other over the internet. Making sure our students are following the rules of netiquette are important, especially if it comes to handling someones mistakes.
As an educator it is important that our students are cautious of others feelings when correcting a mistake. If the students feel discouraged from answering a question or posting their opinion they wont want to participate and that isn't fair. We want to make sure our classroom feels comfortable putting themselves out there.

The internet has so many forums and they all have their own acceptable behavior. Some web pages are so casual, but on the other hand there are some that need to be kept up as professional. The way you email your professor or employer would be completely differently than you would your friends on facebook.
When your talking to your friends on the internet a lot of times the language becomes very casual, not using complete sentences or abbreviating most words combined with slang. Using that language is one thing with friends and family is acceptable, but when it comes to communicating with a professional it's a different story. Communication with someone more professional requires more etiquette, all grammar should be correct as well as the language chosen. Professional language is important, rather than using slang and saying anything inappropriate.
