Sutherland is another fantastic entry in the long running fictional Wings of Fire series. This is the tenth entry in the series, but it was able to capture my attention and excitement just as good as the first book did when I was introduced to the series. Darkness of Dragons builds upon the concepts and beloved characters of the previous books in new and exciting ways along with adding entirely new characters and concepts at the same time. The novel is full of mystery, suspense, action, and even heartwarming moments. Darkness of Dragons tells the tale of an epic journey of a group dragons on a quest to stop the almighty and magical Darkstalker from destroying the world and sending the content of Pyrrhia into war. It is up to Qibli and Winter along with the rest of their team including Moon, Turtle, Kinkajou, and Anemone to stop Darkstalker and prevent the prophecy of this destruction from coming true.  This great epic will span from Jade Mountain, to the Kingdom of Sand, to the Lost City of Night, and come to a thrilling conclusion in the cave where the conflict with Darkstalker all started. Along the way the dragon's and readers understanding will grow as you work to figure out what Darkstalker's true intentions are and if he is really pure evil. Amidst the battles and the severity of the situation themes of love and compassion are explored and how they are more powerful than that of physical strength and power will ever be. Enchanted earrings worn by the dragons are a key aspect to the plot of novel and these earrings represent the enchanted ones that are described. These enchanted earrings have a spell on them that protects anyone who is wearing them from a spell that Darkstalker has casts. Darkstalker is an extremely powerful and dangerous dragon who is the main antagonist of the novel. For a period of time in the novel Darkstalker had used a spell to make any dragon do his binding and remain loyal to him. This heart pin does not represent any physical item in the book, but rather it represents some of themes that are described and the emotions the dragons go through. Although the book is centered around Qibli and his companions including Winter, Moon, Turtle, Anemone, and Kinkajou, taking down Darkstalker there is actually a theme of love and compassion described. Qibli has always deeply cared about his friends and fellow dragons and that is only exemplified in this entry. There is a strong bound among Qibli and his team. The soul reader was a device created by Darkstalker to see how much good and evil was in a dragon' soul. The soul reader works similar in a way an hourglass works where sands falls between the two ends. Depending how much white, evil, sand, and dark, good, sand is in the two ends of the soul reader determines how much good or evil is in the dragons soul. In Wings of Fire scrolls have played a key role since the very first book. Dragons record history of events scrolls, they write and read scrolls for pleasure, and prophecies are even written on scrolls. Every Wings of Fire novel has had a prophecy that is claimed to happen and Darkness of Dragons is the no exception to this. Darkness of Dragons has carried over the Jade Mountain Prophecy from the past few books that describes the destruction of Jade Mountain itself and the entire content of Pyrrhia. These powers are what give Darkstalker the upper hand on most other dragons. He is able to manipulate people with his mindreading and is able to see what people will do to counter his actions, allowing him to plan in advice for it. However, Moon is on Qibli's side and she has these powers too. Moon's powers are not as strong as Darkstalker's, but still give Qibli and team insight into what will happen in the future and what Darkstalker might be planning.
