In the 17th century, Giovanni da Verrazano discovered the harbor city in 1524. In 1906, an Englishman, Henry Hudson, sailed up the river who will later bear his name. Then in 1626, the first governor, Peter Minuit, bought the island of Manhattan from the Native Americans (seems like he got himself a very good deal…).
From the 18th, New York City experienced significant population growth and became the most populous in the USA, even though the city suffered outbreaks of yellow fever and many riots.
In the 19th century, the industrial revolution occurred and NYC boomed as a port, launching steamboat on the Hudson River.
Many famous building were construct in the early 20th, like The Public Library, Grand central Station, The Chrysler Building, The Empire State Building, Time Square, and so on…
These days, the city is still a major industrial and financial center, and also, of course, an important tourist destination.
Geographically, the big apple is covering 785 square km and is located at the southernmost point of New York State. The city is divided in 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx.

A very small museum which is not there by chance. This former speakeasy was a hotspot for the New York mafia during Prohibition and counted among its regulars Al Capone and John Gotti. There are plenty of artifacts related to organized crime and prohibition in the United States: bullets, weapons, period posters and lots of information on the tunnels used by gangsters to hide and transport the goods in the city. The visit ends in the basement, a dark place used by the mafia to settle accounts discreetly... The basement also houses a small cinema. Entrance costs 20 USD.

If you planed on staying a week, the budget for accommodation may vary. 
About the place to sleep, it depends on your choice of course, if you want to spend the night at the Hilton’s, it’s going to be very expensive, but if you want to go in a small hotel or apartment around Manhattan, the price will be around 150 USD per night, per person.
There are so many options for eating out that this part of the budget is the most random. Even if NY is a very expensive city (I know for a fact that an apple cost 5 USD), you could get away with 500 USD per week, per person, if you combine small food stands and restaurants.
I highly recommend you invest in a NY Pass, from 5 to 10 attractions, it reduces the costs, offers free tickets entry and sometimes allows you to skip the line! From 125 USD for 1 adult. 
Anyway, I do not think you can go by with less than 1500 USD for a week.
