To analyse a certain text to another or identifying the relationships between two or more texts.

Ring Around the Rosie:
The original meaning behind this nursery rhyme was its relation to the pneumonic "Great Plague" that hit Europe in the 1660's. We can see that the text is talking about how the plague will spread from person to person. "We All Fall Down", this part references how everyone will die due to the plague. The intertextuality between this version and modern day is that the meaning has completely changed. Currently it's used as a nursery rhyme that kids use often as a sort of game. They go around in a circle and fall down when the song goes "Ashes, Ashes, we all fall down". It is used in this way because the world is no longer affected by the great plague, hence it's original meaning can't apply now

Relationships between texts

Ring Around the Rosie: The initial origin and meaning of Ring Around the Rosie comes from the Great Plague. But through time, many variations of the song started to pop up which caused the song to lose its original meaning. Using intertextuality, we can compare the original text to a different version to gain a better understanding as to why the song was actually altered. One version was sung by African American girls that had the some of the lyrics changed to talking about bread. "Light bread, sweet bread, squat!". We can now use this understand the life of those schoolgirls in 1939. Those girls changed the song to relate to whats important in their lives.

this rhyme arose from the time of the great plague, where a rosy rash (bubonic plague rash) was a symptom of catching it, and posies of herbs were utilised as protection against the smell of the black death. Hence the text, "we all fall down", represents death due to the plague. then it talks about 'tissues' because sneezing/coughing was the final fatal symptom before death
