Back in Shakespeare's time, only boys and men played all the characters, as women were not allowed to perform. There wasn't that much scenery on the stage so audiences had to rely on the actor's vivid imagery to picture the scene on the stage. Audiences payed from a penny so they could stand for the entirety of the play to two shillings for a seat at the side of the theater.

Although most women roles were played by boys or men, comical female parts such as Juliet's nurse were usually reserved for a popular actor or a clown. Actors usually did not wear historically accurate costumes, except for the occasional toga with a Roman play. Instead, they typically wore nice modern clothes(in their time) that were usually second-hand clothes of nobles. As mentioned before, there wasn't that much scenery except for things like a throne, a grave or a bed. There were hidden trap doors so that actors could mysteriously appear or disappear. Characters described as speaking from above might appear in the galleries midway between the stage and the "heavens."
