There are five companies that control the majority of the world's bananas and their bananas come from: Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras. Bananas have to be flown into western countries releasing massive amounts of CO2 (Lights, 2012). Bananas significantly contribute to individual climate footprints (Lights, 2012). Additionally, bananas are often packaged in plastic packaging. Plastic packaging is terrible for the environment (Lights, 2012).
Bananas are bad for the environment. Bananas also are bad for individuals health. Banana plantations are sprayed with large amounts of pesticides (Lights, 2012). Although we as consumers are not harmed by the spraying of the pesticides, it does have a huge impact on the health of the workers on the planation and the villagers in surrounding areas (Lights, 2012).
