Several Caribbean and Latin American nations celebrate the weeks long holiday of carnaval with much importance. Carnaval is celebrated in Aruba and it's nearby Caribbean islands (Curaçao, St. Vincent, Trinidad, Barbados, St. Maarten and Anguilla) . Celebrations take place from the beginning of January until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and include festivities such as parades which are frequented by citizens dressed in handmade regalia. Communal activities of sharing meals, creating music, and exchange take place with frequency and the significance of these parades and celebrations are related to the frugality which is indulged in prior to the catholic holiday of lent. These frugalities vary in themes of excess, decadence, satire, irony. On an individual level, they manifest in varieties and come together in a group Celebration.

In Aruba, as well as many other nations, the beginning of Carnaval is signaled by the construction of an effigy designed in the essence of King Momo and the frugality of the season. The end of Carnaval and the beginning of a disciplined seasson of lent is signaled when this effigy is burned.

The Caribbean island of Aruba is a sovereign state of the Netherlands, which lies approximately 15 miles North of the coast of Venezuela. Where as many South American nations have their own independent and democratic governments, this island (which is 75 square miles in size) operates as a constitutional monarchy. Aruba has its own self-governing parliament, but is dependent on the Netherlands for matters of foreign policy and defense
