Performing my story

Sofie's Reflection:

Honestly, I would rate myself a 2/10 for my drama story performance. That time I felt petrified. I couldn't process what was going on. My heart was beating fast, my hands were sweating, my throat felt tight, my voice was trembling, my stomach felt uneasy, and I was scared to make eye contact with anyone. I even forgot my lines. I felt as if I just wanted to dig a hole and disappear.

I am disappointed with myself because I practiced hard on my script, which I memorized. In addition to that, I also practiced adding gestures and sound effects. I hate myself and deeply regret the fact of not being able to perform what I practiced. I am not sure how to fix this, and this has is also not the first time that happened to me. I think the way I can resolve this, is to just focus on my breathing and my lines, not the actual audience. However, I know this is not helpful for storytelling performances; since it involves engagement with the audience, making eye contact, moving around, and making cool sound effects and gestures.

I surely know that I will get a 3/8 and I hate myself for that. I wish I could time travel and get the performance right.

During my process of becoming a storyteller, I experimented and played around with different types of gestures, facial expressions, voice tones, sound effects, and tempos. I learned that when you are a performer, you should focus and zoom into your actions and lines, not people’s opinions on what you are doing. Furthermore, I learned to be loud, clear, and confident while performing; to not hesitate or be shy about what you are performing, and to make sure I don’t laugh.

This unit has given me a lesson on how to tell a story, before I didn’t know what “storytelling” meant and how to start a story. I thought storytelling was reading a book to someone, but now I know that “storytelling” is when the storyteller uses their imagination and creativity and translates it into words, gestures, a mixture of voice tones, and sound effects or maybe retelling a story that they have heard from the older generations to the future generations.

In conclusion, this unit has taught me to just perform and to not be shy about what I am performing.

I honestly feel like I could have done better in my storytelling performance because I have placed a lot of effort into memorizing my script and adding in the gestures and sound effects, on the day before my performance. But when I performed it, I didn’t include what I practiced at home, into my real performance. At first, I was petrified and didn’t include any gestures, and then I was laughing because my classmates were laughing at me.
