Advisory Purpose

The purpose of advisory at Souhegan high school is to know students well through:

Building relationships and community
Supporting healthy development toward adulthood
Supporting academic achievement and skill building
Promoting postsecondary planning

Elements that make an advisory program successful

Actively engage one another in an environment that promotes respect, trust and courage
Support social emotional development with learning experiences and feedback
Support identification of and preparation for work-based learning
Foster peer learning and team building experiences
Support health and wellness learning experiences
Support movement toward growth mindset
Foster a student-driven experience
Promote and facilitate healthy communication skills
Involve and engage the community as partners

Benefits

Connection to peers. A strong advisory program helps students get connected to one another in meaningful ways. Through class discussions, democratic classroom decision-making, Socratic seminars, and other activities, students can form bonds with one another and also learn more about themselves in relation to others. This is something we know is important for 21st century skill building, and the advisory can be a time to do this without the need to teach specific course content.

Connection to adults. A strong advisory system provides students meaningful relationships with adults. There is research to suggest that strong adult mentorship while in high school increases the likelihood of graduation and postsecondary success

Advocacy. A strong advisor-advisee relationship means that the student has an advocate in the school building. This means the student can feel supported, and if or when that student faces some personal or academic difficulty, rather than mentally or physically “checking out,” the student has someone to go to for help, feedback, and assistance.

Personal Growth. As a result of the student’s personal connection to an adult, the student can learn more about his/her academic and personal strengths and areas for improvement. A student’s own self-awareness is critical for postsecondary success, and a good advisory program can help students become more self-aware through 1:1 discussions with their advisor and also time for those discussions as a peer group during the advisory time.

Roles and Responsibilities of the advisor

Advisors will take an active role in keeping up with each student’s status at school by gathering information about academic standing, attendance and behavior from teachers and parents.
Advisors serve as a point of contact for parents & guardians and will communicate this role in the beginning of the year.
As advocates, advisors will intervene in situations where a student’s pattern of behavior is interfering with overall performance. This may include providing specific support, developing strategies to address the problem, or seeking out additional services.
Advisors will not be expected to address all of a student’s needs. A good advisor, however, can identify those needs and help the student find the supports the student needs to succeed.

Indicators for the roles and responsibilities

Goal setting at the beginning of the year. Progress report review and one on one conversations. Report card review and one on one conversations. Attendance at parent meetings/IEP meetings
Open house night meeting. Once a semester the advisor emails home. Progress report narrative and report card.
Goal check ins during advisory. One on one conversations. Referral with guidance. Conversation with student’s teachers.
Monthly meeting with same grade advisors to discuss progress in advisory at meeting intended outcome. Also monthly meetings with same grade advisors is an opportunity to brainstorm new activities for intended outcomes and problem solve challenges.

Credit for Advisory

Credit for Advisory: Clarification of current requirement to bring into compliance with Ed 306.02(e): credit is defined as “the record keeping structure that is awarded to a student who demonstrated achievement of graduation competencies organized around the specific credit”.

Advisory has been a hallmark of Souhegan High School since the 92-93 school year. The documented purpose of Advisory at Souhegan High School is to know students well through: 1) Building relationships and community, 2) Supporting academic achievement and skill building, 3) Promoting post secondary planning, and 4) Supporting healthy development toward adulthood. Examination of survey data strongly indicated that parents, students and faculty believe that credit should be awarded for Advisory. Survey data also indicated diverging opinions among stakeholder groups- parents (31.02 %), students (29.95 %), and faculty (18.84%) who felt that Souhegan should definitely not tie credit to existing non-credit bearing graduation requirements (Division I Exhibition, Post-Grad Plan and Senior Project). Some to all of these currently non-credit bearing graduation requirements are completed in Advisory. After considerable discussion, students and faculty on the Graduation Requirements Committee supported continuing to award ½ credit for Advisory per year. This decision was based on the reality that students currently demonstrate competency on our Portrait of a Graduate competencies, Work Study Practices, as well as in these non-credit bearing graduation requirements as a function of their successful completion of Advisory.

Ed 306.02(e) defines credit as “the record keeping structure that is awarded to a student who demonstrated achievement of graduation competencies organized around the specific credit”. In order to be in compliance with this definition and continue to award credit for Advisory, Souhegan should leverage existing practices and structures to meaningfully measure and assess students’ work based on school-wide competencies in advisory. The Graduation Requirements Committee identified the competencies of “Skilled Collaborator” and “Confident Global Citizen” as being particularly relevant to the purpose of Advisory and agreed that by formalizing and documenting currently non-credit bearing experiences within Advisory, Souhegan can continue to award credit to students and be in compliance with the Department of Education’s definition of credit. Further, the committee believes that these changes could happen while still fulfilling the documented purpose of Advisory and will honor the work students currently complete as a part of non-credit bearing requirements. Ongoing work in this area will include appointing a new Advisory Coordinator who will help guide and facilitate the necessary changes.
