Moving image was so amazing as audiences never   experienced anything like it before so it was truly mind boggling for them.

the story couldn't be edited so it was all played in one shot.

Georges Melies - A Trip to the Moon

These two men discovered editing by cutting and gluing pieces of film together.

Melies discovered it by accident when his camera jammed whilst he was filming a man walking down the street and when he went over the footage it looked like the man had vanished.

Edison furthered tjhis by linking shots together. He started by putting together footage that had already been collected but then moved on to film his own stuff.

You had to cut the film in the order you wanted it to be shown. 

As you cut the film and placed it together, it lost quality.
