Reflect on 3 areas of MYP Inquiry in planning:
(1) How do Big Ideas form foundation of SOI?
(2) Why do SOI's need a real-world context for exploration?
(3) How do inquiry questions support the SOI?

Inquiry based learning video and discussion

Structured approach - ss are given step by step instructions

Guided - teachers choose qs, but direction guided by ss

Open - ss create qs and guide direction. T supervises.

F: how many of our summatives have been based on inquiry vs traditional? Percentage wise. I think 70% of own has been inquiry based. In previous year, maybe 40%. Was more textbook driven before, but this year less textbook so more time to be inquiry.

Chandru: more discussion this year, more topics ss wanted to discuss. They have had opportunity to reflect in every unit. Is it valuable? Yes they are authentic. Maybe 60 - 70%

Chris:

Stella:

Flora: by the end of G10, ss should be able to respond to all types of tests (IGCSE, SATs etc) and perform similarly on all of them, as opposed to ‘this is how you do these blanks for the listening test’ etc.

ACTION: check board in F office. We want all ss to be roughly same phase by G9 (within LA and LL).

SOIs:

F: big conceptual learning is not new in teaching, but it’s super important to focus on in MYP. SOI comes from your big understanding. It has to include the related concepts etc. So, narrower than huge ideas, but broader than just content based. How do you see your own understanding of conceptual learning now? For me it was 80%.

Chandru: I need to improve on my SOIs - not too broad or too narrow.

Chris: see the value for sure and it helps to make content actually relevant to students and their lives. I need to keep it at the forefront of my mind a little more, but overall I am pleased with how I have used it. Pinning it on wall helps a lot.

Stella: also put it on wall and it helps. For past 3 units I didn’t have much in conceptual understanding as I did not understand it - it seemed vague to me. F: ok well the ‘teaching the big ideas’ doc in MYP has good ideas and can help with that.
