I was wondering if they were wearing makeup or masks, but now I figured out that it is just puppets and human.
Our group also wondered why they put the theater pitch black and light only to the puppets. Turns out they put it pitch black because they don't want the audience to see the humans moving the puppets.

Bunraku theatre is played  by puppets. They are actually life size. It is pitch-black in the theatre because the the people in the back that don't want to be seen controlling the puppets. It started in the 16th century. The instrument in Bunraku is the koto and they had to play it in the dark. 

Kabuki:
I learned that Kabuki is pretty similar to Noh Theatre. I discovered that the stage is dark because the characters are puppets and the people who are moving the puppets don't want to be seen. It started in the 16th century. I learned that noh theatre is played with men only even the women characters. I also learned the noh theatre started in 14th century.
