What I learned from August Wilson's biography from the notes, is that his mother was black, and his father was white, and he and his family were the target of racial slurs. I believe that this impacts the play's message because it explains what the Black musicians have to go through compared to their white counterparts, and how it correlates to the racism that he faced because he is mixed and grew up with the dual (pressure I guess), and how to deal with that throughout his adolescence and maybe adulthood. That is similar to what the band has gone through, and maybe the film is tied in so closely with his trauma, that maybe this film is a way of also trauma dumping.

I feel like the movie plays a big part in our learning topic currently. There could be signs of feminism especially since the main character (Ma Rainey) is queer. It has been said that she was excepted for who she is by her fans no matter her being queer or not (Mattern), but i still feel like there will be some major signs of feminism because of how long ago this all took place.

For example I took notes on when you said Ma was purposely dressing high end and expensive to show people what that she was capable of looking expensive, even knowing that she was going to be talked down upon regardless because she’s a Black woman in the music industry. Ma was radiating the attitude that she can be high end to just because she knows other people don’t think she can for the simple fact that she’s Black, queer, artist.
