Something cool about me is that my birthday is on Halloween. I have done sports my whole life and I could not live happily without music. I am fluent in Spanish and I am half Colombian. I attached the song "Robarte un Beso" by Carlos Vives, a very famous Colombian singer. This song has to be one of my family's favorites. It is always a good time when this song comes on. My taste in music is very diverse so I wish I could link more songs but for now, I think this song is good to share. One style of music that I do not like is country. I am very excited for this class because music is one of my favorite ways to express myself!

I was in orchestra all throughout middle and high school, and I think that helped me shape my appreciation for instrumental music, especially movie, video game, and TV show soundtracks. It was very difficult for me to pick a piece, but in the end I decided to pick a piece that I played with my orchestra that ended up being one of my favorites. It's a very complex piece to fit all of the different melodies together. The best recording I could find is the first 4 minutes of this recording of the whole suite.

[Case Coker] This is a song from Donkey Kong Country 2 on the Super Nintendo (SNES). It's an ambient track, so it's not supposed to have too much harmonic movement. This is accomplished by having a constant repeating ostinato that keeps the chord changes grounded and kind of unifies the whole piece and the different chords into one big mood. The composer David Wise also spent weeks inputting the samples into the SNES in order to add the gradual chord changes of his compositions in a way that wouldn't overwhelm the SNES's small soundchip. Also it sounds quite nice.

They aim to embody west Texas through the instruments they play, their method of playing, and their lyrics. Every member of Flatland Cavalry claims Lubbock as home, each one contributing to the writing of this song, throwing in an attribute they all remember or miss about Lubbock, like feeling the sandy soil blow into their hair, or about the various country bars around town. Ultimately, Stompin' Grounds is an ode to my hometown, accompanied by the sounds that characterize Texas country.

This Piece of Music was literally ingrained into my soul during my childhood in Lubbock. Anytime anyone mentions LBK my automatic trauma response is to give Buddy Holly's entire history. Buddy Holly is from LBK and with his band, The Crickets, along with influences from gospel, blues and country, performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. This is very significant because it allowed their musical style to be seen throughout the world, including England, where members of the Beatles were LOVING IT. The show was very popular and basically shot them into fame. The sounds can be described as unique, with the strong beat, Holly's vocal "yips" and the "traditional rock-and-roll lineup of two guitars, bass, and drum." (thank you Wikepedia). I would describe the sound as fast-moving and almost loud- like you can literally hear the boots stompin' on a dirt road. This song is significant because he's talkin to Peggy Sue- the drummer's girlfriend at the time after they had broken up. It holds personal significance for me because it was played at one of my dad's band's 50's concerts when I was younger. I remember myself twirling around basically yodeling "PEGGY SUE" for like an hour and a half. The song, and Holly's style screams "West Texas" but was actually very scandalous for the bible belt. Now it holds for every LBK native the place where Buddy Holly, the reference made in Mclean's "American Pie" is from.

I find personal significance in this song because I have lived in cities ranging from Seattle to New York. Although this was an interesting experience, it did create a feeling that I do not have one specific place where I belong, which is similar to the person in the song. The song features a guitar, drumset, bass, and vocals. It has a sort of southern twang throughout the song, which relates to Lubbock, which is the place that I have spent about half of my years. The setting of this song is the southern United States, which is where The Allman Brothers Band originated. More specifically, the major cities of Georgia, Nashville and New Orleans.

Hannah- Millennium

This is a bit of an abstract tie to geography, so it's going to take a bit to explain. I apologize in advance! I have lived in several places, and yet when I started thinking about it, I never listened to music geographically inspired by those places. I have been more partial to soundtracks since I was little, and the one constant setting of some of my favorite soundtracks has been outer space. When I was little, I watched my dad play through the Super Mario Galaxy games, and I listened to that soundtrack so much over the years that I basically have the whole soundtrack memorized, including the order of the songs. Listening to that soundtrack brings a lot of nostalgia for the specific places I lived when I listened to it a lot as well as general visualization of space and galaxies and other planets. As I got older, the Star Wars soundtracks and most recently the Stellaris soundtrack have joined my collection of "space music," as well as themes from Star Trek and other pieces that transport me to space. But I didn't choose any of those soundtracks for my piece. This piece, called Millennium, is a piece for full orchestra that I had the pleasure of playing in high school. We called it a rip-off of Star Wars because much of the rich instrumentation, including brass fanfares, winding woodwind melodies, and string solos, is reminiscent of Star Wars and many musical elements that have become collectively ingrained in our society as representing space. The harmonic held by the violins at the beginning of this piece was described by our orchestra director as "the piercing light of a star," and the cello solo about 3 minutes in conjures up a visualization of a silhouette floating in space against a background of stars and planets. The fanfare at the beginning and end of the piece is extremely similar to the throne room scene at the end of A New Hope. All in all, I have always felt a very strong tie to space music, and even if I have never personally left this planet, I feel it is an integral part of who I grew up to be and the music preferences I have.

https://www.jwpepper.com/Millennium/2397792.item#.YTlxM51KjD4

I chose this song because it is sung by the very well known Colombian singer, Carlos Vives. I am Colombian so I grew up listening to his music and this song specifically has been a part of my life for the longest time. In the song, you can hear many traditional beats and instruments found in Colombian music. It starts off with a simple beat and then other instruments come in. These instruments later all combine to create an amazing song. The song is about a love interest and the lyrics use metaphors and similes to show his love for the girl.

Being from (close to) Austin, Willie Nelson's kind of a cop out answer, but there's a reason why he's so iconic. This is probably my favorite song of his. While it's not the outlaw country that he initially became famous for, this song still has elements of country while also representing the melting pot of music that Austin had become at the time. I feel like the piano and his vocal delivery do a lot to convey the emotions of the song and make it a very impactful performance. Personally, Willie reminds me of my parents, as he's one of the artists that's often on in the background of our house.

It was written as a traditional cowboy song in the 1800's and sings of the tranquility and beauty of the midwestern plains. Starry skies, fields of buffalo and cattle, and rolling hills and flat plains create a calming environment that one can truly call home.

In the song, it depicts a mother leaving her children and family for a better life in Denver. Denver was an escape for this mother, and her children just ask "Why?", for what could be better than being with your family?

There is a steady beat throughout with even though at some points it will pick up right before it gets to the chorus. The chorus is repeated three times throughout this piece. Some of the places reminds me of being outside at night and watching the stars and the sounds you hear slightly that are not too loud.

The composer used many different sounds only from type 2’ers to incorporate in this song. I also loved that he talked about how most of the fingerprints he used from his friends and family had to do with water.

When I took the personality test, I was a tied type 7 & 8. Type 7's are optimistic, spontaneous, high-spirited, and practical. They can also become a little scattered and distracted. I feel like the track 7 song showed this. It sounds free and whimsical and uses sounds that make you feel like you're floating. It rises high and repeats instrumentals, but also at times is chaotic and almost distracted. I like how it repeats the line, "I'm restless for what comes next," because I feel like this line describes a 7. I do relate to the personality type 7, and agree with how the song describes it. However, I was also a type 8. Type 8's are self-confident, strong, productive, straight-talking, and like to have control. Along with this they can be domineering as well as struggle to be vulnerable. The track 8 song started off strong and has in your face sound. The words are strong and the rhythm is powerful. I love the line, "Lost in the fight to protect it, I won't let you in." The voice goes soft at times to show hidden vulnerability, and then rises again to show the power and walls that are put up. The song is a journey of both "tough and soft." I feel I am just as much of an 8 as I am a 7. Both of these represent well and show different sides.

One of my favorite parts of the podcast episode was when he explained why he chose the instrumentation used in the song. He said that he only used strong instruments because he felt that strings best represented the type 2 personality. Strings have a warm and comforting tone which describes type 2 perfectly in my opinion. He also said that the lyrics were the journey of two learning to love and take care of themselves as well as others. I think that it was a great choice because I think wanting self love but not wanting to ask for it is one of the main struggles that a type 2 faces.

While listening to the song, I actually cried with how much I connected with the lyrics and how it embodied my emotions. A type 9 is someone who is gravely emotional, but pushes down these emotions. They want a love they can't have/made up in their own mind. In the song, the composer embodies this sadness of being lost and emotional by beginning the song with soft and slow tempo melodies. However, near the end he picks up the melody, which symbolizes how you will rise above these sad moments and figure out who you want to be and find happiness.

I’m type 5, which I guess makes sense. Personally I think personality tests like this are kind of dumb and overgeneralized, like yes 5 describes me in a broad sense but I also identify with types 6 and 4. This test especially just seems very broad and overly simplified (like c’mon it’s only about 20 questions.)

Now to the song : It’s alright. It has elements that I certainly identify with (though not arranged in a way that I particularly like.) The beginning is purely instrumental and in 5/4 (hehe that’s the type number), which I appreciate because it does invite the audience to listen more intently, something that I enjoy doing quite a bit. He goes back into 4/4 for the singing, which I assume is just a move of cowardice on his part. Synths are used extensively, and while I like synths, I don’t think they’re indicative of any personality type. Finally there’s the lyrics, which are decently accurate, as I do like to look at big things and ideas and try to break them down and comprehend them. However, like I said before personality tests are very vague and don’t reveal anything close to the true intricacies of a personality.

In conclusion, the piece fits alright with my personality, but is still dependent on a personality test that I’m quite skeptical of. Also I don’t like the guy’s voice.

The artist employs several changes in tempo, using an upbeat tempo to embody the headstrong aspects of the 8 and slowing it down to show their vulnerabilities, eventually revisiting both the accelerando and the rallentando. Accompanying these changes in tempo are almost complete changes in instrumentation. To go with the upbeat tempo and theme of strength, strong, boisterous brassy instruments with percussive compliments for emphasis on each note are used, whereas a soft piano and string instruments, are used to emphasize the slower tempo and the theme of vulnerability. The dynamic also changes quite drastically, going from loud horn instrumentation and strong vocals to a quieter, soft piano and even softer vocals when switching themes from strong to vulnerable. During the final quarter of the song, a heavy crescendo is used to represent the transformation of a type 8, from a defensive and aggressive person to an accepting and vulnerable individual. The melody moves in a sharp, controlled motion when the themes of strength are being discussed, where it becomes smoother and more sinuous when the softer parts come about. Ultimately, the song moves from the unhealthy aspects of the type 8 personality to the positive transformation they could make when embracing the more vulnerable side of themselves, encompassing the emotions and qualities of a type 8 throughout that process. The discussion of strength and the attempt to uphold a perfect reputation as well as the benefits of embracing vulnerabilities is really where the significance of the piece lies, as it serves as an effective description of the type 8. The somewhat opposite sounds compliment the themes and tone of the separate parts of the song, thus allowing the composer to encompass the polarized characteristics of a type 8.

I agree with this as I would consider myself to be analytical, energetic, and responsible.

As far as the song goes, I believe that the song for my main personality type did an excellent job of using compositional techniques to paint a picture of the type 5 personality. Throughout the song I found there were many different sounds happening at the same time. It allowed for a very in-depth analysis because of this. The lyrics also contributed greatly to the significance of the song. Overall, I was very impressed by the composer's work.

I am an Enneagram type 6w5. I think the test accurately describes me, even if I don’t want to. I thrive based on my perception of being “secure.” Although I can sometimes go against the grain, I am loyal to those whom I love. But I also withdraw a lot of times because of the negative feelings I face. I’m skeptical of everything around me and anxious most of the time. I can never truly enjoy myself whenever I'm supposed to be having fun. I usually listen to slower songs with intentional lyrics, which may be because I find those sounds “safer” than others. My mom always comments on how my music is depressing, but I find that whatever state I’m in, I like to have constant rhythms and lyrics that I personally connect with. I’m also very loyal to my music, which is why I don’t branch out. The things I listened to in high school, during a rough mental season, are the things that comfort me. The composer attempted to make this song an "exhale," which I think he succeeded in. The waltz tempo and the instrumentation was handcrafted to let go of tension, even if he added suspenseful lyrics. He used samples of Type 6s to amplify the "good" things about this personality type. I think he did a great job trying to express the desires of the Type 6.

Based on my results of this personality test, I am a type 9, peacemaker. After listening to the description of these types of people through the pod cast and the playlist, I can definitely confirm that this test was accurate in identifying my personality. It stated so many aspects of who I am and the actions that these people typically take that I honestly never realized I did. In the podcast, the individual was explaining how type 9's are typically seen to compromise their emotions and sympathy for themselves as they are so prone to tend to others first. Although I never really admitted to it or even thought about it, I did catch myself doing such actions.

The composer, as a fellow type 9, really captured my type in this peaceful melody that never really had a climax or fluctuations in dynamics. I find that he utilized strings to create this beautiful sound that wasn't uncomfortable as well as inserted lyrics about how he wasn't "half himself for half his life" and how he is trying to "find [himself] in someone else's eyes." So these aspects really stand out to me on how this composer accurately described my type through music composition.

Robert Johnson is one of the most fascinating blues singers of the 1930s. He is also the subject of one of a very interesting American folk tale. According to legend, Johnson did not start out as a talented blues musician. In fact, he was considered to be mediocre at best. However, one night Robert Johnson went down to the crossroads where a fateful meeting would occur. This fateful meeting just happened to be with the Devil himself. Once he met the Devil, Johnson struck a deal that gave him unparalleled musical talent in exchange for his soul. So, one day Johnson went back to town and suddenly he was one of the greatest blues singers of all time until he died three years later. This is how the story goes at least. Although this story is likely false, it is still very interesting. If yo\u would like to know the real story of Robert Johnson here is the link to a good article about him.https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/robert-johnson-myth-devil-crossroads-story/

German Polka Music--Rylea Helmberger

I included a traditional polka song that is usually played at Oktoberfest, a German Folk Festival. The dancing is a huge part of the music and adds to the sound of it, so I have posted a video with music and dance. The accordion is the main backbone of polka music, but it can also include fiddles, clarinets, trombones, and tubas. Actual Oktoberfest is held in Munich, but it is a tradition that has spread. There are many festivals held in the United States, even one in Lubbock, to celebrate German Americans.

Lofi is a genre of music derived from several strains including jazz, house, and lounge music. It really emerged in the 1950s, but the modern-day definition emerged closer to the turn of the century. Most styles of lofi can be traced back to jazz, hip-hop, or other styles of music that emerged as a result of slavery. I feel this is a significant genre because not only has migration influenced its formation, globalization impacts its evolution. This specific track I included contains the main aspects of lofi, but also contains Asian influences in the style and instrumentation. It truly is a genre that has brought migration/globalization full-circle.

"Andouni" (which translates to homeless) is a traditional Armenian folk song which expresses a longing for one's homeland. However, the most well-known version of the song is one that was arranged by the renowned Armenian priest and composer Komitas in the 1900s. After the Armenian Genocide during World War 1, during which the vast majority of ethnic Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were killed or deported, the song became a symbol of the Armenian diaspora and loss.

“Trouble Man” starts with drums(symbols) and the a make voice enters. The piece itself is very smooth and the pace is laid back, like the musicians won’t be hurried. A saxophone comes in later and carries its own rhythm along with the lyrics. The singer, Marvin Gaye had many problems with depression, paranoia, and was an awkward person. Some of the lyrics represent his personal issues, “There’s only three things that’s for sure Taxes, death and trouble”. This is representative of how he had issues with taxes, drugs, and was later killed by his father after an argument. He keeps coming back to the lyrics “I come up hard”, which could reference how he grew up rough, had a rough life. The style of this song is R&B/soul. There are some lyrical deliveries that are rough, of more expressive that the others.

-Emmalee Rose

"Oh Soldier, Pick Up Your Weapons and Follow Me!" is a cadence that began with WWII infantry as a call to the allies that it was time to begin the day, usually collecting all who knew the call until they had enough allied soldiers to rush the opposition. This concept of a marching/running cadence has spread to armed forces across the globe, originating amongst the WWII Allies, spreading to modern-day China and United States. The call and response form originated from slaves chanting while they worked to pass time or make the horrific physical labor somewhat easier as they were paced by the rhythm of the chant, or cadence. Ultimately, the marching/running cadence has become a symbol of the US Armed Forces, their dedication to physical training, and their imposition on the rest of the world.

I Ain't Got No Home by Bob Dylan.
I chose this song due to the clear themes of migration and troubled times in the United States. This song reminds me of the Great Depression, in which a great part of the United States population suffered through a collapse in the economy. Also, it can be distinguished with the oppression of African Americans too, for it even discusses, "Police make it hard wherever I go" and "I ain't got no home in this world anymore". Overall, people were on the move, and felt as though they had no place in the world. Thus, with this spread of people, ideas, and cultures, it allows all these aspects of human life to mix and create new aspects of society.

This song was originally played by a woman named Edith Pilaf, and it is considered to be her signature song. This version is a cover by Louis Armstrong, and it has been imbued with Louis Armstrong's signature voice and trumpet playing. The song begins with a beautiful trumpet solo that lasts for a while until the first verse is played. This gives us the first view into the meaning of this song which revolves around viewing life through a "pink" lens, like when one is in love. The setting of this song was originally France but in this version the setting is in America.

This song, "Do the Reggay" introduced the world to Reggae music. Reggae is rooted in Rastafari, an African religion in Jamaica, which promotes Pan African thought. Local church singing, rural folk calypso, African folk rhythms, jazz, blues and mento all influence reggae music. Reggae has spread to many parts of the world which each incorporate traditional instruments into the sound of the music. The music developed from ska and rocksteady in the 1960s, and its smooth sound has been compared to American R&B, and southern funk music. Jamaica's complex culture fosters the sound and influences what the music is speaking over, whether social commentary or political.

One undeniable fact is that life has changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grocery store trips went from routine to dangerous; school began the year as the social outlet for most kids and ended as a computer program, contact with relatives went from necessary to a health risk. From this frightful sickness and rapid transformation of life came government intervention, and eventually, lockdown. Many saw lockdown as detrimental, destroying the American spirit and crippling the world economy, whereas many artists saw this as an opportunity to freely create without distraction. This struck musical creators especially hard, as the world was full of new themes to discuss and there was a melancholy society to be capitalized upon. In our carefully curated selection, there is the embodiment of how life changed, and how many went through life as a result of this newfound social and physical isolation.

Link to Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3z2PXFwQYLpq8vVvU7ytbm?si=260e59c8f57a42dd

The emergence of COVID-19 as a worldwide pandemic in 2020 presented many unique challenges in the world of music. With gatherings being limited, it became more difficult both to record and perform music. Concerts were no longer able to be held in person, but the ubiquity of technology and streaming platforms allowed for the emergence of virtual concerts. Even in areas of the world that have gradually reopened since the initial lockdown, virtual concerts are still being held, and will likely continue to be held as a legitimate performance opportunity. This presents advantages such as a greater potential audience and the lessening importance of physical location with regards to accessibility to music. Each piece in this playlist focuses on a different aspect of virtual concerts, from innovation in performance techniques to spreading a message of hope and encouragement during difficult times.
Link to slides -https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1GV2tqG_7Du3Ig36J630rnMQ1b73k-F54f4DPhqSpBj0/edit?usp=sharing

Bo Burnham's Inside- Sydney, Macy, Diana

Bo Burnham begins his Netflix special in a dark room, lamenting that he, as with the rest of the world, didn't expect to be trapped inside a room, going through the same fears, disillusionment, and ironic confusion that encapsulated the COVID-19 quarantine experience. The comedian, singer, writer, and director embodies these fears and loneliness through songs and hopelessly cathartic commentary about his mental health struggles and the impact of being alone throughout the course of a year. These songs find humor in the world's vulnerabilities and somehow make us reflect on our own experiences (New University 2021). Burnham completed this special to get through isolation, and we witness his mental state decline as he contemplates social media, mental health, politics, and relationships. With 20 songs, DIY visuals, and Burnham in his underwear for half the special, audiences can connect with the unquiet isolated mind of Burnham (Holmes 2021). This spontaneous cultural practice reminds us how culture alleviates the pain of uncertainty and how music can aid psychological resilience in both individual and collective groups during times of crisis (Tubadji, 2021). Burnham illustrates his special's uniqueness in the music he made, which we will analyze; including the overall effects of the pandemic on our mental health, collective and individual reactions, the meaning of music and humor in the wake of tragedy, and the accessibility brought by Inside's exploration of the isolated mind.

Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/album/1e5OlE0EY5fucq6GIU1xi3?si=2BnUfPiLQ92QqChgyU5HUg
Presentation: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1DCsqhTw4pFBClifeHp1JqamoXrftFsYH4sU7oeI9nJ4/edit?usp=sharing

I find this interesting because at this time, jazz had basically become academia music, while Hip Hop was more grounded and accessible. Another interesting thing is that Hip Hop had essentially replaced jazz at this point as the voice for oppressed African American, so it can be seen as jazz returning to its cultural roots in America.

Another famous fusion of theirs is Let It Go from Frozen and Vivaldi's Winter, which is another fantastic example of how the pop songs we may listen to can be tied together with and serve as a gateway into becoming more interested in classical music and instrumental music. -Hannah

This song begins with an organ before the guitar, bass, and skittering drums roll in together. These instruments are also joined by a trumpet, saxophone, and electric piano. This combination is what creates this fusion of jazz and rock. This piece was composed in 1969 solely by Davis. Davis was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He adopted a variety of musical directions during his career which kept him in the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz.
-Madison Page

Their hit song "Numb" discusses topics often seen in this genre, namely mental health struggles and feelings of loneliness. A cellist by the name of GnuS Cello creates cello covers of many popular songs, including this one. He captures a very similar feeling of sadness and loneliness in the softness of his playing, adding a much more classical feel to a modern melody. I think this piece shows how two completely different styles of music can take a melody and create two completely unique pieces with a very similar emotion portrayed.

Together, instrumentation and lyrical composition creates a feeling of longing for a carefree beach-lifestyle with the girl of ones dreams. It combines American jazz traditions with Brazilian Bossa Nova influence. It is initially led by a monophonic trombone, and then vocals take its place. Sounds become homophonic when introduced with vocals. Harmony is seen with flutes as an accompaniment that punctuates the melodic line. The melody is repetitive and directionally narrow, kept in 4/4 time throughout the piece.

(My original post was deleted, so here is another post.)

Shakira is a wonderful image of musical fusion and demonstrated this aspect of her musical career in this song in specificity. She once stated, “I am a fusion. That’s my persona. I’m a fusion between black and white, between pop and rock, between cultures—between my Lebanese father and my mother’s Spanish blood, the Colombian folklore and Arab dance I love and American music.” Her career is filled with music that consists of off-center rock that is merged with native Arabic and Latin beats. Evidently the chorus of this song is borrowed from a classic Cameroonian marching chant that was known through the group Golden Voices. The collaboration artist, Freshlyground, is also a great artist who is a South African people Afro-fusion band. The song was even produced into a Spanish version that demonstrates and reaches a larger audience. The reason that she decides to sing about Africa is due to the fact that she wanted to bring a bit of her culture which is attached to Africa " with a umbilical cord" as she states she was "raised listening to music that was heavily influenced by African music." This song, therefore, is a phenomenal and well known example of musical fusion, despite the objections because Shakira isn't fully of African descent.
-Ruth L.

Throughout the year in soundscapes, the sharing and learning of cultures has been an excessive and well known topic that we’ve openly discussed. Whether that be with the sharing of beliefs, ideas, mindsets, and so on, the world is constantly intertwining its influences across the vast array of lands. However, not everything that is shared is inherently good or moral. One such example that still strikes the world like a plague is that of domestic abuse within households, relationships, and so on. It can also occur to anyone, regardless of race, gender, age, faith, class, and so on. Drawing from this information, we can infer that this is not just a problem that we think only affects the places where we reside, but how it horrifically affects every country across the globe in its own sickenly twisted way; it’s not a problem based on race, gender, etc, but a human problem.

A successful game has a soundtrack that is able to maximize the gamers experience, capturing their complete attention. In my liner notes, I go over 7 songs from 5 different games. Each of the songs chosen is important to the plot of the game.

This playlist exemplifies many different styles of flamenco, from more traditional seguiriyas and malagueñas to heavily Westernized tangos in flamenco pop style. As globalization and musical fusions continue to evolve and as technology continues to improve, it is possible that flamenco fusions with pop or rock will become more mainstream. Flamenco’s history is full of fusions and styles that developed from other cultural influences, and it will continue to blend with other musical traditions it encounters. While it is important to celebrate traditional music and the cultural backgrounds it supports, it is as equally important to celebrate a world where differences collide to give birth to something new and just as beautiful.

Case Coker

In these liner notes, I explore the use of jazz music as a response to the injustices committed against African Americans throughout the 20th century and the Civil Rights Movement. I went through, chronologically, events that are commonly regarded as critical in shaping the Civil Rights Movement, starting with the lynching of two African Americans in 1930 and ending in the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. For each of these events, there were famous jazz artists who wrote or performed songs in protest or response, including Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, and Ben Branch. These performances will no doubt showcase the strong link between jazz and civil rights.
