"The teachers and principals in those schools did not believe in the value of testing more than others; they just understood the the importance of test results to others."
While testing is important, for determining what a child needs more instruction in, it is only a part of the whole child. Many of the children who go to this school are looking for their next meal, a clean bed to sleep in, and a parent to tuck them in at night. Sometimes they need more than acing a test, sometimes they need a hug and to be told that most improtant thing in a classroom is them.

All of my students have made tremendous gains in their own unique lives. The joy in celebrating a child acquiring a sign or new word for communication, or sharing an item with another, or standing with the least amount of support, or feeding oneself with a spoon for the first time, or clearing the dirty dishes from the table and putting them in the sink. All of these and more are a direct result of the rigor and relevance applied in the class.-Cheryl

Results for me are seeing a child who has developed self-worth and self-confidence during the year. One who now engages in conversation with adults and peers, copes with adversity in appropriate ways, and enjoys coming to school and participating in engaging lessons. Academic gains at ANY level are always a good thing, too!

From our book reading, "Great teachers keep standardized testing in perspective. They focus on the real issue of student learning." As an experienced ESE teacher, it is important to know each student's academic skill level and set academic goals to close the achievement gap; therefore, the key focus is about growth and learning gains which equals results.
