While testing is important, for determining what a child needs more instruction in,  it is only a part of the whole child. Many of the children who go to this school are looking for their next meal, a clean bed to sleep in, and a parent to tuck them in at night. The joy in celebrating a child acquiring a sign or new word for communication, or sharing an item with another, or standing with the least amount of support, or feeding oneself with a spoon for the first time, or clearing the dirty dishes from the table and putting them in the sink. I believe students feel respected because we treat them respectfully.
