Reynolds says that the violent responses to the nonviolent civil rights movement was embarrassing the country because (in Reynolds eyes and in many people at the times eyes) black people weren't fighting back. In the eyes of the rest of the non-White world, they were getting pushed around. Black activists were showing that they were weak, and they weren't actually changing anything. This of course isn't true, but it is how a lot of the non-white world thought.

Through discipline, self-defense, community organizing and a fortified understanding of who Black people were regardless of White peoples opinions. Malcolm X preached that Blacks were the original people of the world, which pushed back against the Bible and early theories of White Egypt. Not only that, Malcolm X preached about Black self-sufficiency.

Sallye Davis, Angela Davis's mom, had been a leader in the Southern Negro Youth Congress, and antiracist organization, that protested racial and economic disparities. Sallye, and her husband trained Angela to be an antiracist. Most of Angela's childhood was spent wrestling with the poverty and racism around her, she even decided early on that she would never desire to be White. Angela fought and spoke out all the way up until she got to college at Brandeis. When the bombing occurred in Birmingham, she had been conditioned for this. Angela was ready, and now was her time to stand. Angela really rose in the antiracist movement after this incident.

This was because while going through a great depression, which impacted everyone, the black people were also going through another depression. "Racism", Racism was something that gave black people a double depression because, while everyone had no money, the black people had no money and no freedom making it s struggle and a double depression for the black people.

Reynolds said that Dr. King's nonviolent tactics were "embarrassing the country?' because everyone who was trying to fight nonviolent activists with violence were fighting people who were just trying to live, they were basically making people realize there was no reason to fight people who weren't even being violent, who were just trying to live. This was embarrassing because it showed the world how racist the U.S. was, and that they discriminated against black people just because of the color of their skin, NOT because they were violent or inferior.

He believed that Black people could provide care for themselves without having to fit in and/or blend in with society.

The Civil Rights Act was suppose to make any discrimination towards any race illegal but what it did was give white people the excuse that everything is now fine, that now because white and black people were "now equal" black people should get over the hundreds of years of suffering they had to endure. The Civil Rights Act didn't end racisms or make white people rethink about "white superiority", it would instead create an opportunity for white people to use it as an excuse to play the victim, that they themselves as white people where now being treated unfairly. This just end up causing my racist ideas.
