Article Responses:

1. Nationalism unites a country but also, it can hurt an country because it can create a common enemy. This can be shown in a dictatorship, and the government/leader can create a common enemy such as a particular ethnic group. Yes, there are times when a nation should embrace nationalism. This is when they need to remember that they need to put their own country's needs first. This is exemplified in Chapter Three of the article, at the end, the article argues that authoritarian governments are trying to protect their country. But in more Western areas of the world such as Europe, the article argues that nationalism is used to encourage pride in their culture and country.

2. One big takeaway: balance is everything, too much of patriotism, nationalism, or globalism is toxic for any country. Another takeaway is that this balance is important to make sure that minority ethnic groups are apart of these movements and that other groups are not using these "-isms" against them.

Outside Source:

This is an infographic created by an illustrator and filmmaker in Paris.

1. Nationalism I believe is fundamentally misguided. Nationalists are not simply being patriotic and appreciative of what they have, they often assert that their country is the best. In some cases, this type of selfishness does become useful. During times of war and depression, a certain element of selfishness needs to be present in order to fuel the country's survival. The article does not specifically describe benefits of nationalism, but rather talks about viewpoints supporting nationalism, such as the desire for job stability and a more unified cultural identity.

2. The article essentially raises the question of how we can reap the benefits of globally sharing benefits while still keeping a sense of unity within groups.

Outside source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni_6sISHnqQ

This interview with Richard Spencer blatantly shows the things that are wrong with nationalism; Spencer's ideology shows xenophobia based on racial nationalism.

Nationalism builds trust between a government and its citizens, which according to Haidt, will lead to more generous citizens overall, a more prosperous society, lower crime rates, and lower transaction costs for businesses. However, these benefits come at the cost of consciously showing priority for one’s own citizens over humanity's welfare. In the end, strong nationalism costs too much in the larger picture than the benefits it would provide internally would be worth.

Haidt states several times throughout the article that globalists tend to have an umbrella knee jerk reaction to nationalism by dismissing it as racism. While in some cases this could have truth, this statement is provocative to the many nationalists who do not support racism but do prioritize their own nation state. In turn, more time should be spent to understand the motives behind nationalism, but not necessarily accepting their ideals. Additionally, more open values, while bolstering the understanding of globalism, will also in turn create a nationalistic reaction.

https://www.ted.com/talks/yuval_noah_harari_nationalism_vs_globalism_the_new_political_divide

Israeli history professor, Yuval Noah Harari, explains how nationalism and globalism has shifted 19th century political polarization and focus, and how these are a result of humans losing a clear common sight of what they want for the world.

1. Nationalism provides a sense of unity and a motivation to serve and protect your country. Nationalism promotes peace, enhances teamwork(significant towards the military), and displays common beliefs (Daniel, 2011). In the text, the author notes that “Societies with high trust, or high social capital, produce many beneficial outcomes for their citizens...” There are times when a nation should embrace this, such as during a war and favoring nationalism above all else to protect those in your country and what you have built up. There should be a time when a nation should embrace this over globalism, to a certain extent. Nationalists should feel pride for their country and do anything to protect it, additionally they should protect their beliefs and ideas (however should not do so by banishing other cultures/values). As the article suggests, once a country feels like they have reached a stable ground and have generated their own ways of living, the country becomes open to outside values and technology which further modernizes the country and brings in more cultures as the article states, “Combined with vastly greater access to the food, movies, and consumer products of other cultures brought to us by globalization…”

2. A big takeaway from this article is that simply refusing to understand the other side does nothing. This can be seen with, “But if we want to understand the recent rise of right-wing populist movements, then “racism” can’t be the stopping point; it must be the beginning of the inquiry.” To resolve issues regarding the clash between nationalism and globalism, one must understand why the “other side” came to the standpoint they are at. The author notes that simply using “racism” as an explanation to why one might support nationalism is shallow and not enough. Another takeaway from this article is the difference between nationalism and patriotism. In the article nationalism is described as possessing the feeling of superiority over other nations, whereas patriotism is portrayed as having an “equal” feeling of support of their nation.

Outside Sources: http://benefitof.net/benefits-of-nationalism/
This article by Harri Daniel analyzes the pros of nationalism and attempts to understand the basis behind why nationalism appeals so much to those on the right of the idealogical scale.

1. Nationalism can act as a force to better unite the country and bring consensus on ideologies. It can be a way for the people of a nation to work together, and it can facilitate the cooperation of the government and the citizens. This can be supported with the quotation from the article, "Nationalists feel a bond with their country, and they believe that this bond imposes moral obligations both ways: Citizens have a duty to love and serve their country, and governments are duty bound to protect their own people" (Haidt, 2016). During times of downfall, instability, and crises, the government can use nationalism to make sure the domestic issues are under control in the nation.

2. One of the biggest takeaways was how we should make attempts to have a balance between the nationalist and globalist points of views. We found it interesting specifically at the end of the article when it was discussing the idea that globalists should take effort to approach globalism, and specifically immigration, in a way that would gain votes in their favor while at the same time preserving some sense of the nation in order to allow for cooperation, for example embracing assimilation. "If the story I have told here is correct, then the globalists could easily speak, act, and legislate in ways that drain passions and votes away from nationalist parties, but this would require some deep rethinking about the value of national identities and cohesive moral communities. It would require abandoning the multicultural approach to immigration and embracing assimilation" (Haidt, 2016).
Another takeaway from the article is how different nationalism is today compared to nationalism used in the past during imperialistic era. In Japan, the nationalism was utilized to facilitate this united and distinct culture of Japanese arts, literature, clothing, etc. It was mostly concentrated on the culture and its development. However, in today's world, nationalism is mostly used in politics because politics is a prominent aspect in our daily lives now.

Source: https://theruleoffreedom.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/nationalism.jpg

This source should be looked at because the cartoon displays the extent of the influence that nationalism can have, which we know can obviously be very strong, especially in times of crisis. Through this political cartoon we can see that no matter what time period it is, it can continue to be influential in nations. It also shows how we need to take into account the dangers that nationalism poses to the nations that implement it.

As a whole, Nationalism serves to hold a country together through the connection and understanding between a government and its people. The moral bond of a government and its people results in: lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity, among others. In other words, this ideology counteracts the “anomie”, or normlessness, as described by Emile Durkheim. When compared with globalism, the main issue arises with how the very connotation of globalism now evokes a sense of racial bigotry and general negativity.

Some of the most profound perspectives and observation from Haidt are found in the discussion of the nature of racism and his descriptions of the general trends that the racism follows. Racism in and of itself is described as a psychological predisposition, and this perspective of dissenting backgrounds will always cause a conflict. Thus, the real focus is outlined to not be focused on whether or not and where it exists, but it should instead be on when they come up and what causes them. This relates to the second take away, which describes the general trends towards tolerance in our nation, along with a powerful and authoritarian-driven backlash that is predicted by Stenner to follow.

https://www.ted.com/talks/yuval_noah_harari_nationalism_vs_globalism_the_new_political_divide

Yuval Noah Harari at TED Dialogues explores political divisiveness and current turmoil in relation to the nationalism vs globalism debate.

1. Nationalism has the ability to unify a large group of people for a specific cause. This can be often seen in times of war, when the government champions the country and promotes the benefits of fighting for it. During times of instability and tension, an increased amount of nationalism can maintain control over its citizens. A nation should embrace nationalism over globalism during times of war, because more people would be inclined to fight for their country rather than be against the idea of war as a whole. Nationalism is also important for a government to maintain control over larger countries, such as China, who instill Chinese pride into their citizens at a young age. However, in a time of peace, globalism is a better option due to the fact that it increases world-wide cooperation and world trade.

2. Haidt makes convincing arguments to advertise the benefits of nationalism to his readers. One of the ideas I took away from the article was that nationalism can be used as a political tool for a specific party to gain popular support on issues that would otherwise be risky to put in place. Such examples include limiting mass immigration, which Republicans want to enforce having been a long time critic of mass immigration. Now that Muslims are immigrating to the U.S. at a rate unlike any other, the Republican party has been promoting nationalism to increase sentiments for people that are not American. Another idea I took away from the article was that globalists tend to generalize nationalists as racist because of their fundamental beliefs. I think it is important for people to be open-minded, and take in the ideas of others, even if they vastly differ from their own. Rather than focusing on having one ideology, a mix of both globalism and nationalism would most benefit a nation. Characteristics of both can provide a sense of pride of one's home country, as well as a sense of unity with countries abroad.

Outside sources:
Below is a political cartoon about the globalization of nationalism. It seems as with more leaders embracing a more authoritarian like rule and introducing a more isolationist and more nationalistic policy, the wave of right-wing supporters seems to be increasing around the globe. More right-wing supporters results in more right-wing leaders. For example, in France, far right French candidate Marine Le Pen took second place in the Presidential election by advocating for pro-France, anti-EU, and anti-immigration policies that gained mass support from right-wing supporters.

1. Nationalism is a helpful tool when bringing people of a country together. It is a unifying force that can help create a sense of patriotism during a time of social or political turmoil. Nationalism is something that should be embraced over globalism during times of war when the need for a bond between person and country is crucial. When people feel connected to their country they are likelier to fight for that country as opposed to the globalist view where the "bigger picture" is emphasized. The emphasis of the working for a greater more global cause would not be beneficial to an individual nation-state during a time of war.

2. The main points of nationalism and globalization differ but that doesn't mean that one ideology is superior to another. I believe that we can take away that neither is necessarily better than the other and in order to have a successful nation-state the views of each side must be taken into account, such as immigration. Globally the topic of immigration is widely accepted to be good and refugees are welcomed into a state if need be, but from a national standpoint this seems as though it would be a disadvantage for the people already living there.
Outside Source:
https://www.truthdig.com/articles/an-insubordinate-president/
this article discusses how the current president of the united states has a strictly nationalistic view point and it is causing diplomatic problems in many many aspects.

1. Nationalism is having patriotic feelings to bring a country together. With nationalism, the people have a shared motive that brings them together which gives that nation a sense of trust and unity between them. A nation should embrace nationalism at times because the nation is coming together to fight as a whole for what they believe in. Governments should place their citizens’ interests above the interests of people in other countries.

2. Nationalism is a double sided coin; it brings a nation together through feelings of patriotism and can be used for good within times of chaos but it can also be terribly fatal. Nationalism can also be used by others as a justification for racial discrimination just as those despise Muslim immigration because it is poisoning their society with outsiders. Nationalists in Europe have been objecting to mass immigration for decades, so the gigantic surge of asylum seekers in 2015 was bound to increase their anger and their support for right-wing nationalist parties.

3. outside source
With nationalism, a nation comes together because they all have a shared knowledge or motive.

1. Nationalism is a way to unify citizens under a common thread of beliefs and values concerning your respective nation. Nationalism is beneficial for bringing together varying cultures and finding sameness or unity. Often times, nationalism is seen as an elitist point of view, but, "as many defenders of patriotism have pointed out, you love your spouse because he or she is yours, not because you think your spouse is superior to all others. Nationalists feel a bond with their country, and they believe that this bond imposes moral obligations." Nations should put themselves over globalism in times of war, unstableness, and internal crises.
2. One takeaway from the article is the underlying causes of racism. Racism is taught and instilled in one's set of values; "People don't just hate others because they have darker skin or differently shaped noses; they hate people whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own, or who (they believe) engage in behaviors they find abhorrent, or whom they perceive to be a threat to something they hold dear." A second important takeaway from the article is that globalists often trigger non-globalists by jumping to conclusions and using loaded language. They say that nationalists are,"racist, pure and simple", causing more and more people to join nationalistic efforts and see globalists as ignorant and extreme.

Source: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/elena-ulansky/is-nationalism-on-the-ris_b_10224712.html

This article discusses the rise of nationalism across the world- from Australia's election, in which Norbert Hofer barely lost and used rhetoric similar to that of Donald Trump. It can be beneficial to embrace Nationalism during times of crisis like a war or a depression because it can lower crime rates and transaction costs for businesses, and increase levels of prosperity and generosity (Haidt).

2. One takeaway from this article is that saying Nationalism is the fault of racism oversimplifies a complicated situation. For example, these nationalists would be against the policy for having women only days at some Swedish pools as being immoral for preventing sexual equality. Although this would make it more accessible for Muslim women to swim, many people, including liberals, have an issue with this because it distinguishes the sexes. This doesn't necessarily mean the opposers are racist. Another takeaway is that championing diversity creates a divide within our society, and that celebrating our similarities rather than our differences can create a better sense of unity. Using Nationalism to emphasize our similarities can be valuable for unifying groups.

Outside Source:

https://scroll.in/latest/857836/nationalism-is-the-biggest-factor-for-bjp-in-gujarat-polls-chief-minister-vijay-rupani-tells-ndtv

This is one of the major parties in India that champions Nationalism as a way to unify the people and make India more economically competitive.

1. Nationalism can benefit a nation during a time of crisis by uniting the population and creating one dialogue about what the next steps should be. So, while nationalism can slow economic growth brought upon by globalism, it is very effective at mobilizing a nation in one direction -- making it a plus during a war.
2. With the inclusion of "Imagine" by John Lennon, it solidified the ideas of globalism, and how globalism would affect the world as a whole. Another takeaway was that the example from Welzel's example states that when there are less existential pressures, people will be more tolerant is that it was an interesting idea, because in America our existential pressure is less than most other places, but on the other hand our nationalist groups are quite large because they are experiencing existential pressures that they wouldn't have experienced without globalism.
3. http://prospect.org/article/good-and-bad-nationalism
This article is about the differences between good and bad nationalism. The shared sense of identity, norms, and history amongst citizens promotes trust for the government and their fellow citizens. This sense of trust in a society is vital as societies with high trust have exhibited many positive aspects such as lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity.

With globalism, the opposite type of attitude is shown as supporters believe that coming together with other countries would make them stronger than simply being nationalist. They believe that immigration is good as it promotes the combination of other countries creating a stronger union. Globalists believe that nationalists are racists, as they don't promote immigration and feel proud of their country’s own achievements

Nationalism should be used rather than globalism, to unite the country in crisis. When a problem arises and the country needs to come together and fight rather than just let foreigners come in.

One takeaway from the article is the real causes for racism. The article states that people don’t hate or dislike people because of their appearances of a certain race but instead the fact that their values aren’t the same as theirs. People that are different in the way they act or how they handle things can be seen as offensive to others and this can lead to “racist views” about them.

Another big takeaway from the article is the need for balance between nationalism and globalism in a country. In the article it discussed that globalists should approach globalism with things like immigration but also have a sense of nationalism in concerning themselves with the nation to allow for a balance between the two to work together.

Outside Source
http://www.abc.net.au/religion/articles/2014/04/22/3989671.htm
Nationalism can be created in a country if people can accept other people's values and differences but are still united by their common nationalist ideal.

1. Nationalism encourages the formation of unity among a population, leading to fewer conflicts and greater opportunity for policy advancement. Furthermore, the sense of pride in one’s country promotes a healthy social contract and sense of trust between the government and the people; this in turn leads to economic benefits such as high social capital, lower crime rates, high levels of prosperity, etc.

We believe that nationalism is necessary during periods of international conflict, in order to bolster morale and further the safety of one’s own country. Obviously, this is an extreme case, but even during times of peace, a sense of nationalism should be maintained in order to satisfy the patriotic tendencies of citizens. Globalism, particularly economic globalism such as sending manufacturing jobs to less prosperous countries, is only successful when a country’s population is stable enough to maintain their personal economic stability.

2.

Racism stems from more than skin color- Rather, racism is a generalization of moral values of peoples. This generalization does not necessarily connote inferiority so much as a sense of otherness that separates a group from mainstream society; “People don’t hate others just because they have darker skin or differently shaped noses; they hate people whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own, or who (they believe) engage in behaviors they find abhorrent, or whom they perceive to be a threat to something they hold dear.”

Authoritarianism is a psychology predisposition to become more intolerant when one perceives a threat- We initially assumed that traits such as intolerance were rooted in someone’s cultural background; the article challenged that belief, claiming that the possibility for authoritarianism is genetically based, and can be exacerbated by societal factors and emotions. This idea is supported by Stenner’s study, which showed that presenting pre-identified “authoritarians” with material about America’s increasing diversity resulted in them becoming “more racist and intolerant”

Additional Source :https://www.pri.org/stories/2017-08-24/there-are-parallels-between-polish-and-american-white-nationalist-movements
Details the (concerning) similarities between the rise of nationalism and white supremacy in the US vs. Poland, including factors such as anti-immigration sentiment, Nazi paraphernalia, and a rise in hate speech.

1. The benefits of nationalism are that it promotes country pride which encourages civic duty and responsibility which in turn encourages democracy and a sense of unity amongst the citizens of the country. It also benefits the militarism of that country as more national pride creates a sentiment of increased national security and superiority. According to the article, nations tend to embrace nationalism over globalism when mass immigration "threatens" national identity and culture as well as how immigrant "assimilation" is conducted and affects the nation receiving immigrants. Some examples from the article include, as mentioned, Muslim immigration into European nations which can either create heightened nationalism with their assimilation into European culture or increased authoritarian tendencies to "control" the cultures that are coming in (ban of headwear in France).
2. The two biggest takeaways from the article are that 1.) the determining factor that decides immigrants' acceptance into another culture is how well they are able to "assimilate" and appreciate the culture they are becoming a part of. For example, Muslim immigration from Syria into parts of Europe will be accepted with open arms and increase nationalism if they show cultural immersion and appreciation but will show "status quo Conservatism" if they do not "assimilate" as desired by the country. 2.)The article mentions that nationalism isn't synonymous with racism (skin color) but rather demonstrates a pride in national identity, patriotism, and at times superiority. One example of this from the article would be how Monbiot states that the patriotism is putting the nation's interests in front of another nation or culture's interests--- as opposed to being overtly racist. For example, Gordon Brown's statement about "British jobs for British workers" can be interpreted as one that emphasizes worker pride and employment rates for desperate British citizens. It can also be interpreted as something somewhat racist in that the only available jobs are reserved for British citizens and not other races or nationalities.

Outside Source:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/14/politics/donald-trump-asia-trip-takeaways/index.html

In this article, Trump both demonstrates the economic nationalism he presents to the United States-- pride in economy and "independence"--- and he also references other countries that should take care of their own economies, improve them, and put their own interests at the top of the list.

1. Nationalism can make citizens of a country trust the government more, but can also cause tension between a country's internal affairs and their external ones. According to the article, nationalism can:
- lower crime rates
- make citizens more generous
- lower costs of business transactions
(Haidt)

However, a nationalist mindset, as mentioned previously, also disregards global welfare. The focus on a country's singular well being often leads to the country feeling a sense of superiority; this, in return, leads to more problems on a world wide scale.

2. A takeaway from the article is that too much of one thing is not good; to have balanced values is important. Another takeaway is the idea that people should try to understand the ideas behind different values, such as nationalism, but not necessarily sympathize or agree with them.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/is-globalization-anti-nationalism_us_5970e3aae4b0f68541cd6320

An article by Vijay K. In nationalism " Citizens have duty to love and serve their country, and governments are duty bound to protect their own people" (Haidt) Nationalism focuses on the idea that government should focus on its citizens instead of focusing on foreign powers, In return citizens focus on their own country and their loyalty. Benefits of this are that is creates trust and moral obligations to the people and the government. This should usually not be placed over globalism, unless a country is in crisis, such as civil war or economic failure.

2. A takeaway that we got from this article is that values must be balanced. If there is too much of one thing, even if it is beneficial to an extent, than it can become a problem. Leaning to one side to much, can result in poor decisions. Another takeaway was that people don't hate each other die to their race or ethnicity. The article says that people hate each other due to differences in beliefs that are not compatible with them.

Additional Source
https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-kkk-today/

Citizens gain trust in the government as well as become more obedient members of society. This healthy social contract with the government in turn causes lower crime rates, improves overall public participation and improve economic rates. When the immigration crisis occurred in Europe in, many nationalists argued against letting the Syrian refugees into Europe as they saw it as a national security concern, as well as an attack on European customs and traditions.

2. The first biggest takeaway is that nationalism and racism are two separate concepts, and that they can not be synonymous to each other. The largest driving force behind nationalism is the incapability felt by one group of people when they are met by another foreign group of people. This fosters moral standards and self-sufficiency within the country, as well as good relationship between the government and the citizens. This new trust can produce beneficial outcomes of "lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity." Nationalism should be embraced over globalism in circumstances where the foundations of a certain culture or lifestyle is threatened by an outside group, especially during periods of conflict to promote safety.
2. A prevalent perspective that the author discussed were the psychological reasons for nationalists and right-wing parties coming together to make the undefinable radical force we see today. In recent global elections, it is seen that these two different groups come together to maintain a strong voice in politics; perhaps the only way that these two groups can attempt to oppose a rise in globalism. There is a risk in violence and extremism that they are willing to take in order to remain vocal, and any attempt at contribution is labeled as only racism. The main takeaway from this article are the directions that globalists can take to prevent violent forms of nationalism and right-wing politics. The concerns of nationalists are often pointed as racist, where there needs to be a deeper understanding of larger issues that could be addressed. It is important to not that globalists can play a large part in compromise to relieve the strained actions of a nationalist group.

Source: http://jewishweek.timesofisrael.com/how-worrying-is-rise-of-polish-nationalism/
The battle between nationalism and the Jewish religion is an interesting dynamic, especially because they are expressing anti- semitism. The biggest takeaways from the article were the messages that nationalism wasn't necessarily equitable to racism. Not only that, but it was also interesting to see the benefits which stem from a nationalistic society. Additionally, the claim where increased living standards combined with democratic capitalism serve as a base for more tolerant ideas is a major point.
It implies that nationalism and the rise of the Right would only foster only poorer economic or threatened conditions

which is further proven when many of the supporters of far-right populism are there because they feel threatened.

Outside sources:
As shown in this political cartoon, the artist believes that institutions such as the EU is a failed plan being sunk. This excerpt from the article is important in debunking a big stereotype that has become common in the US pot-Trump. Many people assume that all Republicans are trump supporters solely based on the party they belong to, but this is often not the case. It's important to establish this differentiation and to not place shift hatred and blame centered on Trump to his party.
     (2) “People don’t hate others just because they have darker skin or differently shaped noses; they hate people whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own, or who (they believe) engage in behaviors they find abhorrent, or whom they perceive to be a threat to something they hold dear.”.

1. Nationalism gives a strong base for improvement and centralization in your country, and helps promote a strong central government. Nationalism is a useful ideology when a country is struggling and needs to focus on internal affairs, such as boosting their government or economy, as globalism can take away from focus on these issues. In the text, Haidt outlines the Brexit vote distribution by location, and we can see that the more rural voters tended to strongly agree with breaking from the EU. These voters feel that the country is losing their values socially and economically due to immigration, and therefore felt that taking themselves out of a large union such as the EU would be beneficial to developing English culture and focusing on the issues that they felt were immediate.

2. We feel that the first big takeaway was how the gap between globalists and nationalists is widening, preventing compromise on big issues such as the refugee crisis, and how when each group tries to talk about other big issues or pull in one direction the other pulls back. This is shown by the Brexit vote, where the majority happened to be the nationalists who were opposed to immigration and assimilation of culture following the large acceptance of refugees in the EU. The other big takeaway was the psychological difference between authoritarians and conservatives, especially in relation to the psychological study regarding the “button” that is pushed in authoritarians heads when faced with a moral challenge, as opposed to the decisive nature of other thinkers when faced with these issues. This helps to highlight the issues that our planet is facing, as there has been a recent uprising of authoritarian thought as refugee crises arise globally.
------------------------------------------
We found this article about President Trump withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, which is interesting because it shows how an authoritarian faction is more focused on nationalism and national expansion instead of globalism.

1. With nationalism, comes the benefit of moral obligations to one’s country/community. In turn, these obligations ensure protection, cultural unity, national trust, and desire for national progress, especially in light of international competition between nationalist nations. These benefits are substantiated by Haidt in his statement that “Societies with high trust, or high social capital, produce many beneficial outcomes for their citizens: lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity, among others.” When a nation seeks to preserve its regional sense of trust and the uniqueness of its culture, nationalism should be embraced over globalism.

2. One of the main takeaways from Haidt’s exploration is that a sort of balance must exist between globalists and nationalists, and without attempts to consider the implications of both viewpoints, a nation risks extreme polarization, in which the threat of authoritarianism can manifest. Additionally, Haidt conveys that nations have respective needs and what works for one may not work for another. In terms of nationalism and globalism, this implies that it can be reasonable for a nation to want to preserve a national and cultural distinction from its neighbors. Donald Tusk accurately embodied this argument by chastising himself and his colleagues for advocating a unified Europe without nation-states because it created a dangerous nationalistic backlash.

1. Nationalism is the belief that one's own country and its culture is unique and worth preserving. Nationalists believe that their government should place their citizens' interests over the interests of people in other countries. These beliefs help facilitate a support for citizen unity and the government's support of its people. Nationalism has benefits such as lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity, among others. Despite this sense of unity, some nationalist views have been seen to be extremely racist or illiberal.

2. One big takeaway from this article was when the author was describing the correlation between the towns in Britain in favor of the "Brexit" act and opposition towards immigration. Many British towns were opposed to immigration and their reasoning behind this, explained by the author as the result of the large influx of immigrants that had minority populations of terrorists, caught us by surprise. The next point that we took away from this article was when the author was discussing the loose use of the word racism with regards to nationalism and Muslim immigration. We found some of those points very interesting, and specifically the point regarding how racism doesn't always correlate with nationalism.

3. http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2017/11/12/poland-white-nationalists-independence-day-orig-vstop-mss.cnn

During a Polish independence day event, 60,000 white nationalist were present.

1. Nationalism is a political tool used to unify under a single cultural/racial banner. It creates a demand in people to represent a higher entity or social group. This often creates a superiority complex, as nationalism does foster a form of rivalry between cultural/racial groups. A tangible bond between a sect of people (given that the demographics of a country is diverse) to a government. Constituents are more likely to abide and accept a government. In times of adversity, a nation might employ nationalism to spark a mass movement that encourages a government's policies or agenda, even though nationalism may cause a division between a majority and minority to be exaggerated. Examples of improved societal/political states are: lower crime rates, transaction costs, increase in prosperity, and a more cohesive bond between people of like backgrounds.
2. a) Governance must take into account both a globalist and nationalist view point. In other words a international form or domestic form of governing. To find a middle ground between the two groups has become increasingly more difficult do to the widening gap of the ideologies.
2. b) The idea that acceptance of authoritarianism as a form of governance is not a choice but instead a genetic coding that is heavily pronounced in societal settings that challenge us is very alarming and interesting.
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/daniel-wagner/rising-nationalism-a-thre_b_7534358.html
- Economic nationalism in China

1. Nationalism is a term in itself characterized by promoting the interests of a particular nation, and therefore advocates deep thought and consideration for one specific place. This consideration includes a moral obligation of a population to protect their nation and, through this, to ensure national trust, a desire for national progress, and unity throughout the nation. This ideology can be more beneficial than globalism, where the nation's economy is in a declining state, and should be chosen before globalism especially in cases where the foundations of a culture or way of life is threatened by an outside force, as this could lead to a lack of safety and peace.
2. I found it interesting that the author analyzes the claim that patriotism and racism are indistinguishable and defends the opposition to this statement by using an analogy with a husband and wife, and by characterizing nationalists as those who "feel a bond with their country, and they believe that this bond imposes moral obligations" by citizens to love and serve their country and by governments to protect their people. I also found it interesting that the author believes in a describes the balance there must be between globalism and nationalism in order to compromise and get alone and avoid large conflict. While there is clear bias toward nationalists rather than globalists, he explains that there must be a combination of both that leads to a concession of argument and conflict.
https://i1.wp.com/www.thelastamericanvagabond.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/syria-proxy-war.jpg

With this unity, there is an obligation of the citizens to serve their country and of the government to serve the citizens. In addition, with nationalism, there is a true appreciation for the country and a willingness to protect the country.
Nationalism is especially important in times of war and disunity in a country. It can help the citizens reach a consensus and cooperate better. However, globalism is more effective in the cooperation of a whole because it benefits all parties included. Whereas nationalism is more focused on the one country.
2.
One thing that we can take away from this article is the motivating factor behind nationalism and extremism. As stated in the article, when citizens become fed up with certain treatment or situations, they decide that enough is enough, pushing them to an extreme in an effort to battle these issues.
Another thing that we took away is that, although the article is supposed to be in favor of nationalism during certain times, we began to dislike the concept. Learning the motivating factors behind nationalism causes us to feel slight disgust towards it, and we do not think that it is in the best interest of people as a whole because it always ends up excluding one group (usually another country). This belief of being superior than other nations is not intended to be racist, but though implies it. Nationalism brings the relationship between the people and the country. Societies with high trust with their country tend have lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for business, higher levels of prosperity, and propensity toward generosity.
2.

1. Nationalism encourages people to be more productive in their local community. It was a responsibility to be a part of something bigger which can foster good personality traits. It promotes unity. Nationalism is important in the time of war and turmoil because it encourages to work for a common goal and cause. Examples of this include cloth and silver rationing in the US during WW1. Strong nationalistic views encourage assimilation of immigrants rather than the creation of factions within a nation. This can be seen in the case of Muslim immigrants fleeing from Syria to Europe.
2. We think that one takeaway from the article is that immigration isn't always a disrupter for nationalism but rather can encourage new nationalistic views and build a stronger nation. This can be seen in Angela Merkel's open door policy regarding immigration. Her policy encouraged further German nationalism with a focus on being a diverse country. Our second takeaway is that nationalism and globalism do not have to be opposing forces. An example of this is the cosmopolitans who embrace diversity and welcome immigration but are not anti-nationalists. https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/1.818513

1. Nationalism puts the needs of the citizens of one country on the highest priority, therefore promoting stability and prosperity for a single nation. It adds to the security and community of a nation because citizens are expected fulfill their duty to "protect their own people." A "shared sense" of purpose, characteristics, goals, and culture makes a community stronger. Nationalism ensures that unique cultural identities remain intact despite the trials of time and a technologically-developing world.

2.
a) Nationalism does not necessarily stem from racist ideals, contrary to what the majority of this article implies. It states that globalists view Americans of small towns, who do not want to lose their jobs or livelihoods to foreigners, as selfish. When this situation is pulled out of context, it does seem as though the small-town citizens do not want others in need to thrive. Yet, when truly considered, these people are simply addressing the needs of those who depend on them and of those whom they love, so it is only natural to understand why they would not want to lose their source of income to others.
b) As a nation becomes more secure, both militarily and economically, they can develop into a more progressive society. I think that the article explains this progression well. There is a direct link in the behavior of a nation to the level of security that its citizens or its government feels. When a group of people become more secure, they can rely less on their familial structure and move to a more independent lifestyle. However, when the opposite scenario is the case, and chaos occurs in a nation, the social vibes tend to turn more conservative as citizens look to others for support, and are less welcoming to the unknown.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/06/opinion/chappatte-on-the-globalization-of-nationalism.html
This political cartoon displays the dominant countries of the world, having successfully gained power, advising the "globalization" of their political views or "their nationalism." I find this somewhat troubling because we should not impose our country's view of the world upon other countries, but try to promote every country's stability and nationalism for the entire world to be strengthened individually, but at the same time.

1. Nationalism can be considered beneficial because it promotes the idea of pride in an individual which provides security and unity in a nation. Usually in a time of war, nationalism is more beneficial than globalism because the country has to work within itself in order to defend its own interests and it is most effective when its citizens want the same outcome. An example of this would be the advertisements that were used during WWI which were very derogatory and degrading to the Germans, yet they promoted patriotism and support for the war within America.
2. In our opinion the first biggest take away from the article is that we should not be so immediate in our accusations of those that support nationalism or the far right because they were forced into that extreme position, they are not necessarily ideologically that extreme. An example of this would be automatically calling someone a racist if they don't support immigration, when in reality the person could just want to protect what they believe is their nation's economic security. The second take-away that stood out to us was that some people are predisposed towards authoritarian policies, and that the extreme view of the left triggers these people to respond in the way that they do. An additional way of saying this is that the majority of conservatives are actually opposed to authoritarian/ far right ideals, but they see joining those groups as the only way to make globalists and leftists hear their political voice. An example of this would be Donald Trump's hostile takeover of the Republican Party.

1. One of the main benefits of nationalism is the unity that it can bring to a country. Many nationalists feel an unbreakable bond with their country, and as stated by Haidt, feel a moral obligation to protect their way of life. This assists in uniting the government and the governed in a way that lets them cooperate. Having nationalism does not inherently imply that someone is racist or a bad person. The trust facilitated by nationalism can often bring “lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity” to a society. There are certain times when a nation should choose to exercise nationalism. A nation could use this to try to preserve their unique identity, but there is a fine line between this and discrimination. Often times when uniting against a certain ideal, the blame is placed on the group of people who stereotypically display said ideals.

2. One of the major takeaways from this article is that a majority of people do not hate someone because of their skin color, but because they are perceived as having incompatible values. These ideas are not instinctual, but are taught by the society. The other takeaway is that authoritarianism is a psychological predisposition to become intolerant against a threat. I had thought that it was culturally or socially thought to react a certain way, but it makes morse sense in the scheme of things that it is something psychological.

http://www.cleveland.com/darcy/index.ssf/2017/11/roy_moore_voter_instruction_da.html

This is a political cartoon depicting a major problem with nationalism in America. According to a Nationalistic ideology, in order to protect the people, a government must place their citizens’ interests above the interests of people in other countries. This benefits a society by facilitating a preservation of culture. Furthermore, trust is promoted in a society through a shared sense of identity and history. In the age of Globalism, it is easy for native traditions to be diluted, but with Nationalism, it is much easier to preserve the cultural aspects of society.

2.
One takeaway from this article was that Nationalism is not a racist, but a duty bound movement. This can be especially beneficial for a country during times of crisis such as war or a financial depression because citizens form relationships through their similarities while recognizing the differences of other groups. This thought process can "produce many beneficial outcomes for their citizens: lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a prosperity toward generosity, among others.” However, it can also leave other groups out which causes globalists to perceive these beliefs as racist because it is formed on the bases of separation and differences.

One major take away from this article is the pointed remark that in general, the issues at play are not merely ones of racism. This was best explain through this remark, “people don’t hate others just because they have darker skin or differently shaped noses; they hate people whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own." Another take away from this article comes from the balance that should be made between the globalistic and nationalistic agendas in order to prevent turmoil.

1. The general takeaway of nationalism that it is a way to unify a group of people because of their general desire to protect their people and country. The benefits are nationalism are seen in times where a direct threat is posed against a nation, and therefore a country would more likely embrace nationalism over globalism. While globalism works to be inclusive and consider the state of others outside their own country, we see that there are times when a nation feels threatened by an event, for example, “hidden terrorist cells that planned and executed the attacks of September 11 in the United States”. With something like a direct threat, it’s important to consider the interest and protection of one’s own country. Citizens have a duty to love and serve their country, and governments are duty bound to protect their own people.
2. One takeaway is that there’s a deeper motive to racism, suggested by Haidt, which is based on moral concerns from the hatred of people who appear as a threat to the integrity of the moral order. Stenner related these to the characteristics of authoritarianism. It’s interesting that she uses this to suggest that authoritarians' racist and intolerant mentality on immigration, homosexuality, abortion, and divorce did not stem from selfishness, but their desire to protect their group or society. Another takeaway is that Haidt states that "nationalism beats globalism", however continues to introduce that "moral psychology can help explain and reduce tensions between the two". This idea suggests a conclusion that a balance between nationalism and globalism is important to create the foundation of a more united nation with moral strengths from both sides.
http://policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/november-2017/the-problem-with-the-nationalism-label/

1. The benefits of nationalism are that a country can have pride in their heritage. As the article proposes, a society with a sense of identity, like history, and cultural norms promotes trust in their government. However, the only time a country should really embrace this sort of nationalism is when they are trying to establish themselves as a world power. It is when a country has acknowledge that they have influence in the world is when the feelings of nationalism should go more towards globalism. Like Japan trying to shy away from its Chinese origins; once Japan has achieved the split in the nationalities between Japanese and Chinese, the nationalism should stop more for a globalist mindset. The idea of nationalism should be used to insight a sense of pride in one’s culture and identity, but it should not be used to fuel feelings of superiority of another group.

2. One of the first important take aways is the consideration of another perspective/motivation behind racism. The article describes how this is not based on the color of someones skin but the new and frightening ideologies and culture that they share. There is a huge fear of the unknown which leads to want to stay in the own safe ideas and lifestyle. Others do not have this fear and would love to mix cultures which is our next point, that it is important to consider there are both people who want to spread cultures which others what to stay within their own country and not threaten its culture and identity. As global citizens, we must consider all people's feelings and understand how people can feel both comfortable and uncomfortable with the change.

About the comic:

The comic displays the EU essentially stuck between a rock and a hard place.

1. Nationalism is a unifying factor. Haidt states that nationalism creates trust within a group of people, and it can have many social and economic benefits. Nationalism can be a result of increased globalism: as globalist ideology gains more attention, the needs of parochial groups are neglected, causing them to move further right in their political ideology. Nationalism is often times seen as inherently racist, but this is not always the case. Nationalists feel that it is their obligation to serve the country, and it is their country's job to do the same. This is exemplified in Donald Trump's "America First" foreign policy. He was able to rise to power by relating to people who felt that their needs were not being addressed.

2. Nationalism is not the same thing as racism. Although often times nationalist movements have racist implications, one who supports their country over others should not be seen as racist immediately. The issues that the nationalists have must be taken into account. Nationalistic groups give people who felt like they have been ignored a voice. Another takeaway from this article is the correlation between the rise of globalism and the rise of nationalism. Liberalization of groups can cause other groups to move further right, which causes dissension between them.

3. https://ethicsforadversaries.com/category/nationalism/
The political cartoon shows a plumber concerned about a niqab (Muslim clothing garment0 when the toilet (representing the economy) is still clogged.

1. Nationalism can be beneficial to a country, however it is the ensuing ideas that arise from the pack mentality that hurts the country in the long run. Nationalism allows a country to become unified under a culture and history, which according to Haidt leads to trust which in turn leads a myriad of potential benefits such as high levels of prosperity or lower transaction costs. However, unification may come at the cost of discriminating against a group of people in particular which is a slippery slope to the basis of a totalitarian regime, a common enemy of the state. A country in times of war or hardship would be foolish to not use nationalism as its main propaganda tactic, and it is beneficial to an extent to favor this over globalism, but it would also be foolish to assume that nationalism does not lean towards racist and bigoted ideas.
2. I feel like the two biggest takeaways from the article is that racism often comes from "moral concerns", and that nationalism itself is not inherently racist. Racism as described by Haidt is when people create an "other" of people who they perceive have different values or behaviors than them. This creates a hatred for this "enemy" that can be easily manipulated and used to control the masses by focusing on the fear of the unknown. Nationalism itself is also no inherently racist, strictly speaking it is an ideology in which a people want to keep and celebrate their shared history or social and cultural norms. There is the possibility of it devolving into racism, but the core idea has nothing to do with hating the "other".
3. http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2012/10/20121015_nobel1.png
The graph shows the election results of right wing parties in Eu member countries from 1980 to 2012. This strengthens the ties between a nation and its citizens.

1. Nationalism generates unity amongst the nation and its citizens. Nationalists believe that their culture and country are "unique and worth preserving", creating a bond to their nation. This bond creates a two-way obligation, as the citizens have the duty of serving the nation, and the government has the duty to protect its citizens. Nationalism also leads to benefits such as "lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity" amongst its citizens. A nation should use nationalism instead of globalism in situations of immigration, as nationalism tends to be less dominant in comparison to globalism.
2. One thing we took away from this article is Haidt view on the perspective of racism. He proposes that nationalist are not racist and that they base their opinions on moral concerns rather than the color of their skins. Haidt then goes into describing the reasons for this stating that people who engage in inappropriate behaviors or are threat to their loved ones rather than those who, “darker skin or differently shaped noses”.

Another thing we took away from this article was the different Haidt conveys when he shows the views of both nationalist and globalist on immigration and the widening differences between the two groups. While the globalist are in favor of it and the nationalist are against it Haidt brings up a point on the side of the nationalist saying that their reasoning for it is that having people from within their country with the same identity, norms, and history generally promotes trust which immigrants do not have. Haidt contrasts this with the globalist who are “cheering” on immigrants to come showing how they are so different from nationalist.

https://www.veteransnewsnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/proxy-war-on-Syria1.gif

1.	The article argues that nationalism unites people for a movement, and also is a useful tool for forming pride within a nation. Nationalism can be toxic, and while some make the argument that nationalism progresses a countries prosperity and power, nationalism can also halt global progression as a whole. I think when embracing nationalism, one should be careful to what extent the nationalism is embraced. Globalism is the best way to make the whole world progress as a whole.

2.	An important point that the article makes it that the world needs to figure out how to strike a balance between the globalist and nationalist identities in order to live in peace. This is significant because these two values are on the opposite ends of the spectrum, and finding an equilibrium takes time, patience, and diplomacy that western democracies need to muster.

Another main tenant of the article is that many of the shaken up aspects of our world today are governed by the nationalist agenda. No matter which part of the world you are from, there will always be nationalists because they are vocal. This concept is something that countries and their governments will always struggle to deal with.

http://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2017/11/09/biden-axios-phony-nationalism-sot.cnn

This video of Biden speaking on Trump’s actions represents a large part of the liberals in the United States.

1. Nationalism brings the citizens of a country closer together. This can be in a negative and positive way, but that depends on the way that it is advocated. The leaders of a country, along with the rest of the government play an important role in this. Sometimes these institutions may try to sway its citizens to untie for their purposes. These can be beneficial or harmful for the country. Nationalism can occur in ways that improve a community to further progress nationally or internationally. Globally, if a country is thriving through untied citizens under nationalism, then they can work to better the international community by first excelling within.

2. The article defined a clear distinction between nationalism and racism, which are factors that many people conflict on perceiving. Nationalism is unity of citizens under common terms. But this can include discrimination which then turns into racism. Whether the united citizens of a country are inclusive of all members that consider themselves a part of the country or not is where the line can be drawn to define racism. With the globalizing viewpoints of many individuals, it has spread to larger communities and thus become a part of nationalism.

3. http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/14/politics/donald-trump-asia-trip-takeaways/index.html

As we mentioned before, a benefit of nationalism can be unified growth under the institution that advocates such unity. In this example, the fueling of the economy is an aspect that effects every citizen, therefore the cause is something that is nationally shared. This makes it an aspect of nationalism.

1. Nationalism is a virtue. Thinking that your country and culture are unique and worth preserving does not necessarily mean superiority. Just like what the article states, it is a "real moral commitment." This moral obligation promotes trust, as one nation shares a sense of identity, norms, and history. This trust then produces beneficial outcomes for the citizens, both social and economic (ie lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, etc.). In the case of nationalism versus globalism, in times when a nation is in war or decline, nationalism is more beneficial in the security and stabilization of a country.

2. The first biggest takeaway from the article is that racism have a deeper sentiment when associated with nationalism. As said in the article, "... racism usually turns out to be deeply bound up with moral concerns. People don't just hate others just because they have darker skin or differently shaped noses; they hate people whom they perceive as having values that are incompatible with their own, or who (they believe) engage in behaviors they find abhorrent, or whom they perceive to be a threat to something they hold dear." This is when one's moral concern may be interpreted as racist due to the use of nationalism. The second takeaway is that nationalism is dependent upon globalism. "Globalists often support high levels of immigration and reductions in national sovereignty." This globalist value may in turn drive many citizens to support right-wing political leaders, who are the majority of advocates for nationalist movements.

3. https://thediplomat.com/2015/08/philippine-nationalism-and-the-south-china-sea/
This article discusses the debate over the South China Sea and West Philippine Sea territory between the Philippines and China. It gives them a sense of camaraderie that is needed. The article discusses how nationalism can result in "lower crime rates, lower transaction costs for businesses, higher levels of prosperity, and a propensity toward generosity, among others." Nationalism also benefits to excite a people to act quickly where as globalism, while promoting total cooperation, can be lulled into gridlock as the full attention of every party is required to be maintained. For example, Japanese nationalists following the great depression felt as if globalism had ruined the Japanese economy even if it hadn't been entirely caused by the nation itself. Despite being viciously abhorrent toward ethnic communities within it's empire, Japan saw a massive increase in economic activity brought about by the increased nationalist, and imperialist, spirit.

2.
