I’ll be comparing Joseph Banks’ exploration to space exploration today.

GOLD- Joseph Banks searched for plants, animals, and rocks. This is similar to space exploration today because people are searching for new things in space that we don’t know about. But, it’s a little different because Joseph banks was searching for specific things and would take them, and space explorers are searching all around space and they usually won’t take their findings. As a second project he went with James Cook to track the movement of Venus over the sun. This is very similar to space exploration because they also watch space patterns and movements. It’s different because today they are watching for a lot more advanced things.

GLORY- Joseph Banks sailed to Newfoundland and Labrador and came back with different specimens of rocks, plants, and animals to make up one of Europe’s famous collections. This is similar to space exploration because we have to travel to an unfamiliar place to find new things. It’s a lot different because we don’t come back with findings but we come back with information. It’s also different because we don’t make it into collections but we just use it to find knowledge. Banks also recorded all ways that plants and animals were found. This is similar to space exploration because we have to figure out good ways to get up to space. If an experiment goes well we can record it and remember to use that same method again. It’s different because Banks recorded ways to find animals, plants, and rocks and space explorers are recording information involving space.

Once they arrived what did they do? When Banks first arrived in Australia he noted the landscape of it. He wrote “The countrey this morn rose in gentle sloping hills which had the appearance of the highest fertility, every hill seemd to be cloth’d with trees of no mean size.” Unable to land in Batemans Bay Cook sailed north to Botany Bay. Once they arrived the crew got out and went onto the Australian land. In the first six days they made 132 specimens.

What effects does this discovery/journey have on the Natives of that land they explored?

How did your explorer treat them? Banks supported the suggestion of Penal Settlement at Botany Bay. When they encountered the Aborigines musket shots were fired to scare off the people.

What did natives think of them? When the crew encountered the Aborigines they were said to be either not interested or hostile to new people because they were thought of as invaders.

What happened because of the way your explorer treated the natives? Banks made a big influence on the early development of the colony because of his connection with the government.

If you were comparing these primary sources to sources in the early 2000s they are a lot different. In the 2000s people can use pictures, typing, computers, videos, and many other pieces of technology that are much easier and quicker than what Joseph Banks had to do. These sources are similar because they both have the same idea of recording information and things that happened.

If you end up using artifacts--based on the object, how would the person from the time period use this item for exploration? Explain why you believe that.

Joseph Banks could use his journal to keep track of his findings and what he did each day. If he wasn’t able to remember something he could look back and that would help his research. He could use his map to make sure he knows where he’s going and to keep track of all the places he’s stopped.

If your explorer is not interacting with people, you will look at: changes in the land, space, knowledge, maps, impact, etc.

Joseph Banks caused change in plants. When he went to Botany Bay and discovered the different lands and created and collected 30,000 different plants, this created so many more plants when he brought back his work to Europe. He created about 15,000 new plants that the world had never seen before. He also collected another 15,000 from Australia that were new to Europe. He did this by using etchings, paintings, and drawings. All of this caused there to be change in plants in Europe from his discoveries. This connects to research and work that is going on today to cure diseases. Many scientists discover different ingredients in other countries and they take them back to use them to test and create new vaccines and medicines. Then we disperse our findings and send them to places where they are needed. This has caused there to be more and more resources to help cure our diseases similar to how Joseph Banks created lots more plants.

Why do some explorers stay where they explored? Explorers would stay where they explored if they liked the land they found, wanted to keep exploring, wanted to stay in the land they claimed, etc.

Why do some colonize?

-People colonized because they wanted to spread their nations onto other lands

-To create other trading posts

Why do they not?

-If they didn’t like the land

-It doesn’t have good resources

-There’s people who live there

What did they accomplish?

-Made voyages across the world

-Made new discoveries

-Claimed new lands

-Explored lands

Three effects:
Native populations were destroyed- When other nations were taking the lands of the native people, their populations got eliminated. One reason why is because the new people brought unfamiliar disease. Another reason is the new people weren’t nice towards the natives a lot of the time. This is of course negative for the native people but positive for the newcomers because they got the land for themselves.

Deforestation- When the many plantations were created they destroyed big areas of forests. This is negative for the environment of course because they are clearing tree. But positive for the people because it gave them lots of space for their plantations.

Spread Christianity- When the new people came they spread their religion to the natives that were still there. This was a positive effect for Christians because their religion was being spread to new cultures.
