The family’s wealth strikes Zuri in a threatening manner, being that the Benitez family works hard but still falls short financially. Her closed mindset creates a stubborn barrier she’s unwilling to shake. Which is shown when Darius saves Zuri from getting hit by a biker. “‘Uh, you can let go now,’ I say. ‘Right.’ Darius releases his hand. ‘You’re welcome, by the way.’ ‘Oh, thank you,’ I mumble, trying to be polite. He steps away from me, and his face is a little more relaxed now, but I can still smell his stank attitude. Thanks, but no thanks, I say in my head” (Zoboi 16).

Darius’s actions contribute to the moral dilemma Zuri is faced with, Zuri feels she has to almost put up a front front the real her so no one can damage her this is stated “Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Darius shaking his head, as if this whole scene is nonsense. I turn to him and shake my head too, letting him know that we are on the same page, that everybody except him and me is being ridiculous. But he doesn’t return the gesture. He looks away. Whatever.” (Zoboi 17)

Zuri struggles with an internal conflict of being self-conceited and leaving her neighborhood to the “outsiders.” Zuri influenced the plot in a negative view which she learns to overcome later in the novel once she becomes romantically involved with Darius. Her discriminatory attitude towards him for his lifestyle creates a realization of hypocrisy on her end, and therefore, creates a optimistic view on accepting gentrification as her attraction for him grows.

The book takes place in modern-day Bushwick, New York. Whilst enduring the not-so-nice parts the novel helps express genrefication in modern times. The state had become a diversified region with varying social classes and ethnicities.

Zuri felt fulfilled within her very dominant Hatian, Domicanian community, as well as the family being very active to support it. From the tightly knit block parties to cooking meals for the neighborhood which was almost like tradition. “The block party is something we’ve been putting together for the last couple of years, ever since Mama became the one-woman planning committee of the block association. She manages to bring together the ladies on Jefferson and Bushwick to cook and set up a few tables at the other end of the block, while Papi and his homies set up grills on the sidewalk and large coolers of beer near our stoop” (Zoboi 31).
