I liked this book because I thought it was a fun book for 2nd grade readers to enjoy either during independent reading or the teacher may use for read aloud. I could use this book with activity 1.15 in Serravallo (2015) because it is a great book to have students practice inferring and learn how to support their ideas with supporting evidence from the story!

With the perfection combination of vibrant pictures and funny storyline, this book is sure to keep all readers engaged as we share in the bears distaste for rain and new found love of hula-hooping! I could use this book with activity 1.5 in Serravallo (2015) because I can have my students first go on a word treasure hunt to help familiarize them with some of the words and begin to understand the text before reading.

The Seed of Compassion

By: His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Published: 2020
Date Read: 9/9/2020

This book, told by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is a teaching of compassion and how he came to have the outlook on the world that he does. In this book, he talks directly to children and speaks on the importance of showing compassion to others. Accompanied by beautiful illustrations, this book is perfect for young readers and even more so for an interactive reading lesson with a whole class. I could use this book with activity 9.2 in Serravallo (2015) because like this book this activity could be used to help teach students about what it means to show compassion. This activity has students focus on points of the book where they learned something new, and within the discussion prompts, it is possible to use these time to encourage students to think about ways the class could show more compassion towards others.

It tells the story of a little girl on her first day of school and how she admires both her sister and her sister's hijab with what it represents. I thought this would be a good read aloud book for a second grade class because it teaches about another culture that young students may not be familiar with, but it also teaches students to always be kind and be proud of who you are. I could use this book with activity 2.12 in Serravallo (2015) because it would be a great story for students to really engage in the text and ask questions.

By: Nancy E. Krulik
Published: 2002
Date Read: 8/26/2020

This book series was one of my favorites during elementary school! This series is told in the point of view of Katie Carew, a 3rd grade girl who deals with bullying at school and one night makes a wish to be anyone but herself as a shooting star goes zipping by in the sky above. The next day on her way to school she is suddenly swept up by a gust of wind and her day is dramatically changed, as she is as well! I picked this book partly because it was one that I loved as a child and was able to relate to Katie with her struggles at school, but also because I felt that it would be something young readers would enjoy as well. This book would also be great with activity 2.5 in Serravallo (2015) because as an early chapter book some students may still struggle with staying focused on what their reading, so this activity would help them by having them retell parts of the story to gain full comprehension.

By: Laurel Snyder
Published: 2017
Date Read: 9/4/2020

This book was a collection of very fun loving stories perfect for early readers. This book follows brothers Charlie and Mouse as they embark on many different adventures from neighborhood parties to selling rocks. I loved their idea of bedtime bananas and thought students would find it humorous as well. I felt that this book would be great for independent reading and helping students fall in love with the characters of every story. I could use this book with activity 1.16 in Serravallo (2015) because this activity has students infer based on what is happening in the pictures. This book is filled with vibrant pictures that really paint the story line and would be great for students to practice this skill.

By: Sergio Ruzzier
Published: 2018
Date Read: 9/5/2020

This award winning graphic novel is packed full with humor fit for all ages. This story introduces students to a comic book style story that will keep them engaged in the story and lost in the pictures. I thought this book would be a perfect read for emergent readers and be a great way to have students practice their blending and phonics skills on some of the compound words. I could use this book with activity 3.1 in Serravallo (2015) because students may have trouble with some tricky words and this book would be perfect for learning how to use the pictures to see if a word fits and makes sense.

By: Cece Bell
Published: 2014
Date Read: 8/29/2020

I loved everything about this book! It is an award winning story and rightfully so as it tells the story of a young girl and her journey of becoming deaf and the struggles she faced. This story is told in a comic book style and uses animals as the characters, making it even more engaging to young readers. This is a perfect story for readers in grades 3-8 and helps teach students about the struggles other students may face. I could use this book with activity 3.5 in Serravallo (2015) because I can have my students work together in partners and help each other with some of the difficult words in the book. This activity also helps students gain confidence within their own reading skills by helping a partner.

By: Jasmine Warga
Published: 2019
Date Read: 8/22/2020
Genre: Fiction

Written in first-person prose format, through this story you experience Jude's growing awareness of being an outsider with different customs in America than in Syria, with the added unfair effects of labeling people. This story is perfect for 6-8th students as you are drawn in by Jude embracing both the culture in America and honoring her own Syrian heritage. This is a great book for introducing students to other cultures while exposing them to the reality of the struggles immigrants face in America. I could use this book with activity 3.8 in Serravallo (2015) because the context of this story may be difficult for some students to understand fully. By having students stop and think about what they read and reread when they have a hard time, this can help with their comprehension of the story.

I found myself lost in the pages as I learned of Virgil's Grand Failure and how his new found friends saved him from a very scary encounter. I could use this book with activity 11.3 in Serravallo (2015) because Virgil's grandmother is from the Philippines so there is some vocabulary that students may struggle with. By using syllables to "replace" some of these words, students may have an easier time with comprehending the text.
