First, repressed memories do not have enough empirical research, because of the conflict with ethics, to be tested. For a survivor in therapy it is difficult to tell whether they have recalled the memory as a real life event that happened to them in the past or if they've had an imprinted memory. The concepts we learned earlier in this class, such as misattribution , transience, and blocking, could come into play and could (not always) be mistaken for a repressed memory. I came to this conclusion based off of the fact that the use of a therapist/therapy can sway the opinions of those who are called to testify. Additionally, there is no empirical evidence to support the testimony nor were there any implications or uses of the scientific method. Furthermore, the utilization of a clinical therapist can be swindled; in other words the memories can be altered, falsified or implanted. Eyewitness testimonies alone are some of the most unreliable testimonies within court and I feel as though this is a very similar concept. I think since memories can be altered by our brains and memories can be implanted I think that this does not grant solid evidence to be admissible in the courtroom. I also believe that there isn't enough scientific support behind this practice to deem it as a solid piece of evidence in court.

This is because they simply aren't reliable due to a number of factors including the memory sins we've discussed previously as well as the fact that some individuals can be highly subject to influence from medical professionals, who themselves, may also unknowingly be subject to their own biases which can influence their handling/treatment of patients within the context of repressed memories. The example of Beth Rutherford is a prime example of all of the reasons why I would not allow it.
