How I Prioritized the Selection of Online Tools/Databases

As the media specialist in the school, I would always set my priorities based on the students’ and teachers’ requirements, always keeping an eye on the assigned budget set for me. In the case of online tools/databases, I would:

check the features offered by these tools

see if these could be offered by a free (but safe) online tool.

If not all the features would be there, I would then check and see if the ones offered in the paid database or even in the paid version of it would be actually relevant to my school. I see that sometimes teachers tend to go for the paid version of the database, just to be on the safe side, and end up not using the features in that version.

How I Prioritized the Selection of Equipment?

In the case of tools and equipment, I will need to:

check and see how far these would be helpful in implementing the concepts taught in class

how safe they would be to the age group I am targeting

how user-friendly they are

how frequently they change. I would not pay for an equipment that would be expected to get upgraded the following year. Otherwise, I would end up with a large pile of outdated equipment in a couple of years.

how long it would take for this item to be delivered to our school, since we order our items from the States. I usually give myself a time limit of some months between ordering and clearing customs. Also, if these items would be held in the customs, how much would I have to pay to have it cleared? A couple of years ago, we ordered a bluetooth scanner. It took us a month to have it delivered and more than 2 months to have it cleared from the customs. By the time it reached our school, we found that we had paid more than triple its price on shipment and clearance and a new version of the item was already in the market.

How I Prioritize the Learning Center in the Library

Closely related to prioritizing the tools is also prioritizing the allocation of centers. The fact that we are starting this space from scratch would give us the flexibility to allocate certain areas for activities, as follows:

Try to have centers where electronics be used near the electric outlets as much as possible. Although extension cords might be used, it would be better to go for the former option, to avoid students tripping on the cords.

Activities that require an internet connection need to be in areas in the library where the internet connection is at its best.

Activities with a lot of mess, like using paint, colors, etc. can be near the entrance or the exit to the bathroom as much as possible; an outdoor area/patio would be a great option if available.

Centers for recording would be in the most quiet part of the library. We might need to have some folding doors with insulating glass panels added as a divider in this part of the library.

Centers where items with small pieces, like robotics or lego kits are to be put in one side of the library as much as possible for easy clean up.

These new tools and equipment will enhance students' understanding of the STEM/STEAM. It will enable them from being passive receivers of information, to ones who "make" the information, by asking questions and trying to find answers to them in a structured way. These tools will help in areas, like engineering, science, art, design, technology, as well as coding and robotics. It will also teach students how to handle tools while working, raising awareness to safety, planning, and collaborating with others.
