  • Balance of Texts: Primary Source are used in the textbook with comprehension questions that build on the content.
  • Research: The online portal provides many different sources in a variety of formats for student research.  
  • Monitor, Adjust and Differentiate: The online textbook allows for students to type answers into comprehension questions, but I could not figure out how to view their responses from a teacher portal.

  • Historical Thinking: Sourcing, Corroboration, and Close Reading were not words that I saw used in the textbook. 
  • Academic Vocabulary: The ELD component was confusing and not very helpful.  Vocabulary development or front-loading was also very limited without any graphic organizers or practice.    
  • Content Specific Vocabulary: Again, the content-specific vocabulary did not have much in the way of practice or engaging access for students to memorize other than just clicking on the link for a definition or looking a list of the terms on the chapter summary page.
  • Unit Design: The lessons are simple and straightforward but not very engaging or rigorous.  Inquiry is used in the textbook for some primary sources but the graphic organizers don’t really support it that well, except for the timelines (those are good).
  • Assessment Assignment: I didn’t see any assessments in the online materials that were clearly aligned with the SBAC or other similar tests.  The questions were mostly multiple choice and recall.

    Also, the fact that Pearson thinks it's okay to have "hip hop" songs to "supplement" curriculum is problematic for a plethora of reasons.     - Each lesson has a "Flipped Classroom" video that students can watch before reading the textbook.
    - The interactive reader has strong comprehension questions that have various levels of DOK
    - Textbook is very detailed and has a lot of extension activities for advanced students as well as ELL.

    Weaknesses:
    - The "Flipped Classroom" video are very high level vocab and spoken too quickly for many of my ELL or Long-term learners.  The Mexican Revolution Video was way too complicated and confusing in the narrative and vocabulary.  For example, it used words like "remnants", "ousted", and "void".  I had to pause and explain each.  
    Also, the captions on the videos are too small. 

    - There isn't much in the way of vocabulary building exercises at the start of units.  I'd like to see something that involved best-practices or some sort of sentence frame activities at least. 
    - The PDF materials are limited and don't have much in the way of printable assignments. 
    - A workbook with the text and questions in the margins would be much better than the current design to align with what Constructing Meaning has been doing regarding textual breakdown and chunking.
