INTRODUCTION

For the second reflective exercise for UNGS 1201, I want to discuss the current issues that are happening in our country. This kind of phenomenon was not foreign to us as Malaysia will receive monsoon wind twice a year: Southwest Monsoon from late May to September and Northeast Monsoon from October to March. The Northeast Monsoon will usually bring more rainfall compared to the Southwest Monsoon and people living on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia will be affected severely at the end of the year. Hence, heavy rainfall continues to cause widespread flooding in Peninsular Malaysia. This year not only the East Coast state but also the West state are badly affected as the heavy rainfall continues for a few days without stop leading to the water level rising. But the Monsoon Wind was not the only factor causing the water level to rise so quickly. It might be because of the irregular drainage system that cause the rainwater to accumulate and did not flow to the right path. Another reason could be because of the deforestation activities that are caused by humans. Consequently, forests that act as lowland areas are destroyed. So, the rainwater will flow down into the river causing the river to overflow and cause the flood.

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He [i.e., Allah] may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

[ Ar-Rum: 41 ]
Based on the picture posted above, what I can relate to the issues is the people affected by the flood are very affected mentally, physically, and materially. But, we always need to keep in our mind that any test that Allah gives us is beyond our capability to overcome it and it also educates us to be more sabr.

In verse 41 from Surah Ar-Rum stated that the corruption that is happening on the earth is because of the hands of man and the man's greed. So, humans should play their part in preserving the forest the land and do not do any disruption on the earth as not only humans live on the earth but also animals so we cannot destroy their habitats.

As the water level keeps increasing, many people around the area will be severely affected such as losing houses, things, documents, and else. But, the animals are also experiencing the same thing, and what makes it worse is people tend to neglect their pets and rescue themselves first. This situation will force the animals to find a safe place for them on their own. As for the pets, like the picture shown above when the floodwater subsided they found the dead body of the cat as the cat was not rescued. There are more heartbreaking stories when the owner of a pet shop did not let go of the pets in the cage and when the water level rises and the owner was only able to rescue some of them and the rest of them trapped in the cage and found dead after the water subsided.

As for the wild animals in the forest, they were also affected because this time the floodwater level is very high so the animal who lives at the bottom of the forest need to find shelter. Moreover, day by day more deforestation activities is happening resulting in the animals losing their habitat and losing their source of food. This will make the animals run to the housing area and get lost.

There are several ways to solve or to prevent this problem from occurring again :

As students ourselves we can create a campaign or program by joining hands with the university or any NGOs to replant trees because trees are very helpful in preventing floods. Since trees are said can afford up to 400 gallons of water so the rainwater will not flow to housing areas. Moreover, floods are said to become worse year by year because of climate change so what we can do to combat this climate change is by planting more trees. By planting more trees we can also prevent soil erosion as the trees will function as ground grippers and prevent the land from sliding. By replanting the trees we also making the wild animals not losing their habitat and they will not find shelter at housing area.

Another way to solve these flood issues is to fix the drainage system. The drainage system in the city that is frequently affected by floods should be upgraded and will allow water to be moved, stored, and drained more efficiently. Moreover, the community also should work together to take care of the cleanliness of the drainage by not throwing garbage into the drainage or river as it could interrupt the water flow and result in a flash flood or much worse flood when rain is pouring very heavily.

Like mention above one of the effects of the flood is the death of the pets because the owner was not able to rescue them. So as responsible owners and animal lovers they should release the animals when the water rises quickly or take them with them or move them to a safe place when the rain started pouring continuously.
