He had every reason to retreat back to the plantation but he didn't. He saved many lives by not returning to what would have been a very large gunfight. His intuition over reason saved many lives.
The entirety of the movie Django unchained, Is largely controversial. Many racial slurs are used in the movie based in the 1800's. Although it got its point across very nicely. On his TikTok He carves blades out of wood with sharpened stones and appreciates the things given to him by the woods. Dony loves to be out doors and take in whats around him.
Dony and his dog spend a lot of time living off the land and using what it provides. All while documenting it on his TikTok and instagram. He aprectiates the value of nature and what it has given to him. He only takes what he needs and nothing more. He lives by himself in the woods away from others and leads a very simple life. He takes daily walks to new locations every day and sometimes visits his local pond to catch fish. He leads a simple slow and calm life away from all the noise. 
His message is clear in all his videos. He loves the simple little life he leads and he wouldn't change it for the world. He leaves the house to get food and other do other small simple activities and then heads home to his small cabin. He has no hurry or bustle in his life.

He brings celeb's and other big names out into the wilderness to survive along side him and do really strange things like cross chasms and ravines on ropes and ziplines. 
He relies on himself and no one else to keep himself and others alive. Surviving in the wild is no easy task to rely on others in. So he takes the task upon himself and only himself to stay alive. She does not agree to the terms put in place for the arena and begins a small rebellion by not killing the last man in her way, Peeta. She slowly has fallen for Peeta and refuses to kill him. Leading to a revolution later in the series of movies and books. 
Catniss refuses to conform to the rules for the arena that have been put in place for years and years. No one had questioned them for years until Catniss came along. Everyone knew what was going on and no one stood up against it. And those who did were put down by the leading government.
