He states, "I turned my head. And I saw Richard Parker. We were eye to eye, only eight feet apart...We looked at each other in silence, in that half-dazed state of mind, equal to each other as only a predator and prey can be" (164). Pi gained intellectual awareness of his situation; therefore, that is his key to survival. While, "equal to each other" demonstrates the level playing field between the two living creatures. With his family left behind (absolute phrase), "stranded on a lifeboat for several days."
