In Life of Pi, a book written by Yann Martel (appositive phrase), after being stranded on a lifeboat for several days, Pi realizes that he must embrace his primal instincts to survive. He states, "I turned my head. And I saw Richard Parker. We were eye to eye, only eight feet apart...We looked at each other in silence, in that half-dazed state of mind, equal to each other as only a predator and prey can be" (164). Pi gained intellectual awareness of his situation; therefore, that is his key to survival. (semicolon; transition, comma rule.) The phrase "half-dazed state of mind" emphasizes the mental toll of his ordeal. While, "equal to each other" demonstrates the level playing field between the two living creatures. With his family left behind (absolute phrase), "stranded on a lifeboat for several days." Therefore, Pi's only option was to accept his primal nature and develop a mutual relationship with Richard Parker.
