Benito Mussolini was the dictator of Italy, or the Prime Minister as he called it, from 1922 - 1943. He rose to power and used the ideology of facism to control the country. He was someone Adolf Hitler idolized heavily as he rose to power, and took many ideas from him. Mussolini was Hitler’s role model in a way. Facism is the idea of power by force, through the military. Creating fear within the country makes them idolize the leader and “savior” that keeps them safe. Along with his charisma and charm, this is what made Mussolini so popular.

He was the King of Italy, and he was the last King before Italy went away with the Monarch style of government. He became King at age 31 after his father died, and he supported Mussolini in entering WW2. People said that he and Mussolini worked together too much and that with a Monarchy government, the Monarch should not have that much power, and Italy became a republic in 1947.

This alliance is also known as the Pact of Steel. This formalized the Rome-Berlin Axis that was signed in 1936. After the Pact of Steel, the two countries would be both politically and militarily linked.
They mostly wanted to become allies because there were many similarities between facism and Nazism, so they felt that they would be able to connect with each other and be good allies.

What caused the rise of dictators in your region? How did the Treaty of Versailles or League of Nation impact the area?

The problems in Italy after World War 1 led to riots and fears of a revolution. However, Mussolini was strong and able to seize power under promises that he would fix the problems in Italy. In Germany, many people were upset and thought the deal Germany got was unfair, and too harsh. Others took this anger to the extreme, one being Hitler. He got his rise to fame by holding protests and riots, and speaking out about how terrible the other countries were to Germany. His anger fueled the country and allowed his popularity to rise and for him to take control. The Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations impacted the area because all the surrounding European countries were upset with Italy and Germany from WWI. Mainly Germany. Germany was not included in the League of Nations which angered the citizens more, and the Treaty of Versailles solely punished them, which led to a lot of backlash on the current rulers who were seen as weak. The people wanted someone new in power, and Hitler and Mussolini seemed like the best fit with their charismatic attitudes.
