| Introduction to coaching and mentoring was exciting as I had my first session with Dr. Deirdre Raftery. The word coaching has always confused me as I didn’t understand the difference between mentoring, coaching, counseling, etc… The initial interactions and session gave insight and clarity into this assumed confusing concept. The differences between coaching and mentoring as well as the similarities were something new that I learned. Now I know the reason for getting confused. It’s because they share many similarities like both are based on relationships and trust, it’s all about learning conversations, interaction, collaborative approaches, etc… I got a lot of clarity into what differentiates coaching from others. Coaching is unique with special characteristics such as being time-bound, leading to committing to an action, showing direction, challenging and questioning, unlocking a person's potential, focusing on development, and increasing self-awareness are name a few. However, what confuses me still is that some of the above-mentioned special characteristics of coaching are also found in counselling like focusing on development, increasing self-awareness, and unlocking a person's potential. I hope to get clarity as I continue with the lectures ahead. Overall, the session was engaging and informative. Coaching skills such as clarifying, attentive listening, questioning, appropriately challenging, curiosity, expressive words, being present to the coachee, summarizing, and confidentiality are essential to be acquired to be an effective coach. I feel inadequate as I have to get trained in many of the above-mentioned skills.
