After half an hour of wondering who he is the elevator stops and he begins to scream for help. Later on, he hears the voices of teenage boys and the elevator door opens. He is greeted by a bunch of boys, who help him from the elevator. Thomas begins to ask tons of questions where most don't get answers to them. The boys' leader, Alby, and Newt gave him a pep talk on how he should accept how things are and how he should calm down. He allows Thomas to go up and what Thomas sees is Alby and Newt around a very sick kid. Alby screams at Thomas to leave and he runs away becoming more scared. Chuck brings food to Thomas and he tries to get an answer from Chuck even though he doesn't even know. The only thing he gets is they are in a giant Maze with large stone doors and they are people called Runners who explore the Maze. Once night comes, Thomas starts to get used to the place and begins to wonder why. Newt tells Thomas that those creatures are called Grievers and only appear at night. He tells Thomas this isn't a joke and that they must find a way back home. After that, Newt brings Thomas to Alby so he can receive the tour. Alby tells Thomas the questions are only at the end and he begins the Tour. Alby explains the stuff around them and about the Maze. Suddenly, a loud alarm blared out and Thomas saw Alby being confused. Thomas demands Alby to explain what is happening, and Alby screams its the Box. Thomas is still confused and finds Newt to explain what is occurring. Alby began to demand to know if Thomas recognized the girl but he denied it. He did feel some connection but he wasn't sure. After a while, the girl suddenly woke up scaring everybody. She began to talk about how everything was going to change and passed out. Newt later saw a note on her hand that said she is the last one ever. Everybody went silent and Alby, in the end, told her to take her away. Alby then called a Gathering to talk about what just happened. Thomas later spent the remaining time contemplating what had just happened until he saw a beetle blade with the word WICKED on it. After exploring for a while, Thomas found the graveyard. While he was exploring he kept hearing sounds behind him but Thomas ignored them thinking he was just terrified. Suddenly Thomas saw a skinny boy that was running towards him. The boy jumped on Thomas and both began to fight. Thomas was able to push back his attacker and was able to recognize the person. The person who attacked him turns out to be the sick boy named Ben. After that Ben appeared with a bow and told Ben to calm down. Ben then began to mumbled about how he had seen Thomas and should be killed as he is a traitor. Ben then jumped at Thomas but got hit with an arrow in the face by Alby. Thomas later spent some time thinking about what is happening until he saw a boy coming out of the maze. The boy suddenly collapsed and Thomas headed toward him screaming for help. Thomas helped the kid who introduced himself as Minho. Alby arrived a began to demand why he left the Maze early but Minho screamed at why he is early. Minho, annoyed, told him to calm down and let him rest. After letting rest and getting him water, Alby demanded to know what happened while allowing Thomas to hear. Minho said he needed to rest into Alby began to demand to know if Thomas knew anything which got him angry. Thomas wanted to why Alby hated but Alby said he wasn't angry at him just suspicious. With everything that is happening, Alby knows that something is happening and he wants to know what is occurring. In the end, Alby makes Thomas make a promise to tell him anything that he remembers. After that, Thomas spent some time alone until Chuck arrived telling him that Ben is still alive. Chuck told him he would be Banashied but before Thomas could ask a question he already left. Newt and Alby gathered all the boys near the massive door right after it closed. Thomas was wondering what they would do to Ben and thought they would leave him with the Grievers. Some boys drag out Ben of a building while Newt brings out the Pole. Alby began to talk about how Ben brought to himself and Newt handed Pole to him. Thomas was able to see the collar at the end of the Pole. Alby wrapped the collar to the neck of Ben all while he was screaming to forgive him. Alby gave the order the push Ben toward the Maze once the Door began to close. Thomas was woken up by Newt the next day, and he began to complain when it was just 7 a.m. Newt told time Thomas that it was time for him to work in the fields. Thomas asked questions about what he would do until he saw Minho pick up the collar Ben wore right as he was about to leave. Newt told him that Greivers always leave the collar in all the Banishments. Thomas then began to ask questions about the Runners and what they do. While answering, Newt told him he was one until he injured his knee while trying to run from a Griever. After that, Thomas told Newt that he wanted to be Runner which Newt told him he was crazy.  Newt told him he should just stay quiet about that but Thomas still pushed on. In the end, Newt agreed to put Thomas on the potential trainees for Runners if he just stayed quiet. Thomas and Newt went to join Chuck for breakfast went they saw other boys seeing off Minho and Alby who going to look at the dead Griever. Chuck later asked an important question, who killed the Griever? After that, Thomas was introduced to Zart who tended the fields and began to work. Thomas began to ask questions about life in Glade to which Zart answered all of his questions.
